Secondary Education

Our Secondary Teacher Certification program allows you to combine your deep interest in a specific subject area (e.g., Mathematics, English, Political Science, History) with the skills and knowledge necessary to become an effective secondary teacher (grades 6-12).

Here's what this program offers:

  • Subject-Matter Expertise: Deepen your understanding of your chosen subject area while developing pedagogical skills specifically tailored to secondary learners.
  • Comprehensive Teacher Preparation: Gain a strong foundation in educational theory, instructional strategies, classroom management, and assessment.
  • Real-World Experience: Participate in field experiences, including student teaching placements, in diverse secondary school settings.
  • Expert Faculty Guidance: Learn from experienced educators and subject-matter specialists who provide personalized mentorship and support.
  • Pathway to Licensure: Successfully complete the program and meet state requirements to earn your secondary teaching certification.

Steps to Completion

  1.  Interested students complete the undergraduate curriculum, with similar requirements as the subject degree, but choosing courses broader in content.
  2.  After completing the core requirements, interested students must be admitted into the teacher education program.
  3.  Admitted students will then take the pedagogy and curriculum courses that lead towards Georgia certification.
  4.  The final semester will be devoted to student teaching in a local high school.
