Emerging Biomedical Professionals

Emerging Biomedical Professionals (EBPs) is a peer-led group with the goal of promoting career development resources for research trainees and providing service to the Georgia Cancer Center and the community.

Who we are

EBPs include all Georgia Cancer Center trainees, including postdocs, graduate and medical students, post-graduate associates, clinical fellows and residents, international students, exchange scholars, and even junior faculty.

What We Support

Pathways To Success

The Pathways to Success series is an informal, interactive opportunity to learn from the career experiences of successful biomedical professionals, who share insights and advice on career navigation, work-life balance, alternate training options, and other topics of choice. An EBP serves as a moderator to lead the discussion. Our speakers represent diverse professional areas, including:

  • Basic science/clinical research
  • Public health
  • Research administration
  • Bioinformatics research
  • Academic leadership
  • Biotechnology/pharmaceutical/industrial research

Professional Skills Development

The Professional Skills Development series provides seminars and workshops focused on skills needed as trainees develop their careers. Topics include:

  • Communicating our science to the public
  • Grant writing and grantsmanship
  • Grant budget preparation
  • Scientific and manuscript writing
  • Scientific writing for non-native English speakers
  • Preparing an NIH biosketch
  • Promotion & Tenure workshops
  • Library skills including ORCID sign-up
  • Networking
  • Post-meeting reviews
  • Oncologic pathology
  • Clinical trials workshop (proposed)
  • Commercialization/technology transfer

Trainees' Research In Progress

Trainees’ Research in Progress (T-RIP) is a weekly seminar series where graduate students and postdocs present their ongoing research results and receive feedback from other researchers and their peers. T-RIP provides trainees with valuable speaking experiences early in their careers, in a safe, learning environment.

EBP Writing Room

The EBP Writing Room is a quiet, private/semi-private space for Graduate Students, Postdoctoral Fellows, and Early Career Research Faculty to use on a temporary basis for manuscript preparation, grant preparation, and thesis preparation. The Writing Room (CN-2168) must be reserved in advance as outlined in the EBP Writing Room Policy. EBPs using the Writing Room must also abide by the rules set forth in the policy.

Service Opportunities

Academic institutions require, and at times reward, faculty members to serve their academic communities. To gain experience in service, the Georgia Cancer Center offers its trainees many opportunities to serve, including:

    • Acting as guides when area students and community members tour the Georgia Cancer Center
    • Assisting in laboratory demonstrations with area middle and high school students
    • Serving as science fair judges in local schools
    • Volunteering in cancer fund-raising events, such as Paceline (bike ride), Unite in the Fight (walk), and Brave the Shave (hair shaving)
    • Volunteering at Teachers’ Research Workshops
    • Participating in panel discussions on Careers in Science for local students
    • Participating in primary/secondary school career days
    • Serving within the EBP leadership
