Mask Fit Testing

Why Do I Need a Mask Fitting?

Proper fit of an approved particulate filter surgical mask is essential to reducing your exposure to blood and body fluids as well as airborne microorganisms. Fit testing may be required by your school prior to beginning clinical rotations.

Cost for fit testing: $20.00

What can affect a mask fitting?

  • Facial hair will interfere with a successful mask fit test. You must be clean shaven prior to fit testing.
  • Chewing gum or eating just before or during fit testing.
  • A history of pulmonary or cardiac medical condition that may interfere with respirator use (check with your physician).

Mask information

Student Health uses Kimberly-Clark Tecnol PFR95 N95 particulate surgical masks for fit testing. Our masks are National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) approved as an N95 particulate respirator and meet the CDC guidelines for TB exposure control. It is the mask used by Wellstar MCG Health Hospitals and Clinics.
