Internal Medicine Residency Program

Welcome! Thank you for your interest in The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) Internal Medicine Residency Program at Augusta University.

We are the state of Georgia's flagship academic medical center.

At our program, over 70 residents gain a rich and varied clinical experience across a range of settings. These include our 520-bed Wellstar MCG Health hospital, 80 general and specialty-care clinics, and the 440-bed Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center and its associated clinics. We are committed to trainee education, providing a supportive environment that emphasizes learning through direct patient care, bedside rounds, daily didactics, morning reports, quality improvement and safety initiatives, board review sessions, and training in bedside ultrasound and simulations to better prepare residents for clinical practice.

Our program is designed with a focus on the individual, gradually increasing levels of autonomy throughout residency to ensure residents develop confidence and independence in their practice. We place a strong emphasis on building leadership skills, with residents taking on roles as educators and team leaders while learning the importance of teamwork within an interdisciplinary team. Our goal is to instill empathy, compassion, and exceptional clinical skills in every resident.

Our dedicated teaching faculty and the medium size of our residency program foster a strong sense of camaraderie and collegiality among residents and faculty alike. Residents benefit from structured inpatient and outpatient rotations, ensuring focused and continuous learning. Additionally, there are many opportunities for research, inquiry, and discovery, allowing our trainees to explore their interests and contribute to advancing the field. Our program equips residents with the experience and skills necessary to achieve their career aspirations, whether that be in fellowship, academic medicine, or independent practice.

Our Mission

The mission of the MCG Internal Medicine residency training program is to produce compassionate, competent physicians that are prepared for fellowship or independent practice and who provide high-quality, ethical, moral, and cost efficient patient care.

This is accomplished through excellence in teaching, discovery, clinical care, and service.  Residents care for individuals who have diverse disease states from varied socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds in both the in-patient and ambulatory settings.  We provide an environment and culture of quality care, patient safety, collegiality and physician well-being.  Our purpose is to inspire curiosity and systematic investigation while providing residents the tools necessary for their future professional and personal success and to instill the need for habitual life-long learning that is required in the vocation of a physician.

AIMS

  1. Equip residents with patient care abilities, professionalism, interpersonal communication skills, understanding of system-based practice, and appreciation of practice based learning to participate in successful clinical practice or fellowship after residency.
  2. Instill residents with medical knowledge through clinical training in a variety of environments, rigorous didactics and discussion, and continuous self-directed lifelong learning.
  3. Empower residents with the clinical skills, research productivity and faculty mentorship necessary to be competitive for top fellowship training positions or preferred practice choices.
