Internal Medicine Residency Program

Welcome to the MCG Internal Medicine Residency!

I am honored that you are considering the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University for your residency training. Since our founding in 1957, we have proudly trained generations of internists who have gone on to thrive in fellowship, academic medicine, and community practice.

Here, you will join a community of more than 70 residents who care for patients across a broad range of settings—including Wellstar MCG Health, the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center, and more than 80 outpatient clinics. This breadth of experience ensures that our graduates leave with the confidence, skills, and compassion to care for patients in any setting.

Our program is built on progressive autonomy, mentorship, and leadership development. We emphasize the values of empathy, teamwork, and professionalism, while also offering opportunities for research, innovation, and discovery. Most importantly, you will find a welcoming environment where residents and faculty support one another and grow together.

It has been my privilege to serve as Program Director for the past six years, and I could not be more proud of the community we have built. Thank you for your interest in our program—I look forward to the possibility of welcoming you to the MCG family.

With gratitude,

Alyce M. Oliver, PhD, MD
Program Director, Internal Medicine Residency

Our Mission

The mission of the MCG Internal Medicine Residency Program is to train compassionate, competent physicians who are committed to serving the people of Georgia through high-quality, ethical, and cost-effective patient care. Our goal is to prepare residents for fellowship or independent practice while fostering a strong sense of responsibility to meet the healthcare needs of our state.

This mission is realized through excellence in teaching, discovery, clinical care, and service. Residents care for individuals across Georgia with diverse disease states and from varied socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds in both inpatient and ambulatory settings. We promote a culture of quality care, patient safety, collegiality, and physician well-being. Our program inspires curiosity and inquiry while providing the tools for professional and personal success, emphasizing the lifelong learning essential to the vocation of medicine and to advancing healthcare in Georgia.

AIMS

  1. Develop physicians who remain and practice in Georgia by equipping them with the patient care skills, professionalism, communication abilities, and systems-based knowledge needed to provide outstanding care to the people of our state.
  2. Strengthen residents’ medical knowledge through diverse clinical experiences, rigorous didactics, and self-directed learning that prepare them to address the unique health challenges within Georgia’s communities.
  3. Empower residents to achieve their career goals—whether in fellowship or independent practice—through mentorship, scholarly opportunity, and clinical excellence, while fostering a lifelong commitment to improving the health and well-being of Georgians.
