Robert Broughton, MD

Associate Program Director for the Internal Medicine Residency Program

rbroughton@augusta.edu

Robbie Broughton is a graduate of William and Mary and attended the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine for a Certificate in Neuroanatomy as well as Medical School.  He joined the Army prior to starting medical school in the HPSP program.  Subsequently, completed his Internal Medicine Residency at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center (DDEAMC).  After residency he remained at DDEAMC as a Faculty Physician.  He eventually became the Chief of the Internal Medicine Clinic at Eisenhower, a clinic with a patient volume of around 6,000 with the majority over the aged of 65.  During his time at DDEAMC, he developed multiple new curricula for outpatient, board studying and simulation areas.   In 2019, he transitioned to the Army Reserves and started work at now Wellstar Medical College of Georgia (MCG) as a Hospitalist.

At MCG, he completed an Ultrasound Fellowship and continued to develop new curriculum.  Initially, he helped develop a new 18-month pre-clerkship curriculum called the Patient Clinical Experience for which he now serves as the Director. The course teaches point of care ultrasound (POCUS), bedside procedures and outpatient telemedicine.  For the telemedicine portion of the course, students follow established Wellstar MCG primary care patients in free visits that are supervised by an interdisciplinary staff.  He also developed and now directs an annual Internal Medicine (IM) POCUS curriculum and a 2-4 week Internal Medicine POCUS elective for both Wellstar MCG IM Residents and Eisenhower Army IM Residents.  He also started a two-year IM Resident POCUS Fellowship track that selected residents can participate in during their R2 and R3 years, obtaining similar training to a staff ultrasound fellow over two years.  In 2024, he transitioned to the General Internal Medicine Outpatient Clinic.

He is passionate about patient-centered, high-quality care and education for all those involved.  His current research focus is largely in education specifically in telemedicine and POCUS.  When not working, he spends time with his wife, two young children, his sister and both sets of grandparents residing in Augusta.
