MEd Counselor Education

The Master of Education in Counselor Education degree is a CACREP-accredited program that prepares students for professional careers as either school counselors (60 hour program) or counselors in clinical mental health or private practice settings (60 hour program).

Some courses require outside field experiences, coordinated by the faculty, to help students gain a sense of professional responsibilities and expectations in the field. Courses are offered almost exclusively in the evenings to accommodate working individuals and the majority of our classes are offered in a face-to-face format.

Program Mission Statement

The mission of the Augusta University graduate programs in Counselor Education is to excel in the preparation of practitioners and leaders in professional counseling and school counseling settings for diverse populations in varied settings across the life-span; to utilize sound ethical values and personal integrity to provide and encourage professional and community service; and to collaborate in providing advocacy and leadership for the welfare of all individuals, society, and the counseling profession.

Program Objectives

Program Objective 1– Students will be able to apply ethical principles to counseling.  

Program Objective 2– Students will demonstrate how their own identity, values and beliefs can impact their practice of counseling. 

Program Objective 3– Students will know and apply theories of individual and family development across the lifespan. 

Program Objective 4– Students will identify factors that impact career development and illustrate a strategy for creating a career development program. 

Program Objective 5– Students will demonstrate effective communication skills, conflict and stress management, negotiation, and problem-solving and decision-making skills, with consideration to diverse individuals and groups. 

Program Objective 6– Students will demonstrate how to develop, recruit, and facilitate a group process. 

Program Objective 7– Students will administer, score and interpret several assessment instruments and identify those characteristics that contribute to the quality of an instrument. 

Program Objective 8- Students will identify methods and statistics used in research and how research methods can improve the practice of counseling. 

Program Objective 9– Students will provide an accurate client assessment and develop a treatment plan. (Clinical Mental Health Counseling)

Program Objective 10- Students will demonstrate understanding of and effective helping strategies and interventions for the academic, career, social, and personal development of children and adolescents in schools. (School Counseling)

Admission Requirements

  • A minimum of a 2.5 undergraduate GPA
  • Letters of Recommendation- Applicants will have 3 recommendations submitted on their behalf. Upon application completion, a link will be shared with each listed reference to complete.
  • Personal Autobiographical Essay- Applicants will write an autobiographical essay in which they discuss their reasons for wanting to become a counselor, what attributes they may possess which would contribute to their effectiveness as a counselor, what personal characteristics they possess that might hinder their relationships with
    clients, and how they are planning to address those issues. The essay must be double-spaced and three pages in length.
  • Personal Interview- The personal interview with the faculty is the final requirement for full admission into the program. Shortly after the admissions deadline, faculty will select applicants to be invited to the interview based on the quality of the previous criteria. The interview is designed to assess:
    • Applicants’ potential for forming effective interpersonal relationships in individual and group contexts
    • Applicants’ openness to self-examination and personal and professional growth
    • Applicants’ potential to develop knowledge, skills and dispositions in the field
    • Applicants’ potential to work effectively with diverse populations
    • Applicants’ emotional stability
    • Applicants’ receptiveness to supervision
    • Degree to which the Program’s objectives and mission are consistent with the vocational and professional goals of applicants
    • The degree to which applicants display the potential for success in the counseling program and profession. After the interview, applicants are evaluated by the faculty with a rubric which considers all of these factors, including both academic and non-academic issues.

License Disclosure Statement

Augusta University offers several online degree, certificate, and endorsement programs. These programs are designed to meet the criteria for certification, endorsement, and advancement in the subject matter and grade level classifications established by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. Each state board establishes their own criteria for teacher/leader certification, which, in addition to educational requirements, may include (but are not limited to) testing requirements, mandatory certifications, minimum years in service, background checks, applications and fees.
