National Pan-Hellenic Council

The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) is the governing body for Black Greek Lettered Organizations (BGLO) at Augusta University.

Our mission is to promote unity, leadership and service within our organizations. The purpose of the BGLO is to foster cooperative actions of its members in dealing with matters of mutual concern. To this end, the BGLO promotes the well- being of its affiliate fraternities and sororities, facilitates the establishment and development of local councils of the BGLO, and provides leadership training for its constituents.

History

Black Greek Lettered Organizations (BGLO) is the umbrella organization that houses nine social fraternity and sorority chapters. The first five were organized on May 10, 1930 at Howard University in Washington, D.C. - Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. These chapters were awarded a special commendation for encouraging college students to develop a sense of social and civic responsibility.

In 1931, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. joined the council, followed by Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. in 1937. In 1997, Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Inc. joined BGLO as its ninth affiliate member
