Chronic Pain Medicine
Overview
The 3-month rotation allows residents to understand the fundamentals necessary to
provide optimal care for patients with chronic and cancer-related pain. This includes
performing complete patient histories, demonstrating physical examinations, and formulating
treatment plans that involves psychological wellbeing, medication modification, and
essential procedural intervention.
Experience
Residents average 10-15 patients per day. After performing a physical exam and obtaining
a detailed history, residents present the information to faculty and work with the
patient to develop a treatment plan.
Procedures performed include:
- trigger point injections
- lumbar and caudal epidural steroid injections
- medial bundle branch nerve blocks
- and sacroiliac joint injections
Fridays are typically spent in the operating room for spinal cord stimulator implants.
About
Residents use the latest in diagnostic technology and medical and interventional therapeutics
to work with patients to identify sources of the pain, eliminate or reduce the pain,
and teach patients how to manage it.
All clinical activities by residents are directly supervised by pain medicine-certified
faculty. All activities, both clinical and scholarly, that are conducted by residents
and fellows are overseen directly and contemporaneously by faculty.
