Experiences

Shadowing is the process of observing a healthcare professional in a clinical or healthcare setting to learn more about their daily responsibilities, patient interactions, communication styles, and work environment.

Professional programs want students to demonstrate they understand the realities of healthcare careers before applying. Organizations such as the Association of American Medical Colleges emphasize that shadowing helps students better understand healthcare professions and provides valuable material for interviews and applications.

Shadowing a Doctor

Why Shadowing Matters

The Association of American Medical Colleges specifically notes that shadowing helps students understand “what a doctor’s typical day is like” and gives students experiences they can discuss in applications and interviews.

Shadowing helps students:

  • Confirm whether a profession is the right fit
  • Learn healthcare terminology and workflow
  • Observe patient-provider communication
  • Understand interdisciplinary teamwork
  • Gain insight into ethical and professional responsibilities
  • Build relationships with healthcare professionals
  • Develop stronger personal statements and interview responses

Healthcare professional programs increasingly seek applicants who demonstrate:

  • Career exploration
  • Professional maturity
  • Understanding of patient-centered care
  • Awareness of healthcare environments
  • Commitment to service and professionalism

Contact Local Healthcare Facilities

Students may inquire about shadowing opportunities through:

Healthcare environments are professional spaces where trust and confidentiality are essential. Students may be required to complete HIPAA or confidentiality documentation before participating.

Volunteering

Serve Your Community. Strengthen Your Future.

Healthcare professionals are called to serve others with compassion, empathy, professionalism, and cultural awareness. Volunteering allows students to engage with their communities, develop interpersonal skills, and better understand the populations they hope to serve in future healthcare careers. At Augusta University Health Professions Outreach, we encourage students to pursue meaningful service experiences that align with their passions, values, and professional goals.

Located in Augusta, Georgia (a regional healthcare hub with strong community partnerships) Augusta University students have unique opportunities to serve in:

  • Hospitals and clinics
  • Community health organizations
  • Schools and youth programs
  • Rural and underserved communities
  • Veterans organizations
  • Nonprofit agencies
  • Public health initiatives
  • Faith-based outreach programs
  • Rehabilitation and long-term care facilities

Volunteering is not simply about accumulating hours — it is about developing a genuine commitment to service and learning from the communities you engage with.

Why Volunteering Matters

Professional healthcare programs value students who demonstrate:

  • Compassion and empathy
  • Commitment to service
  • Cultural awareness
  • Leadership
  • Communication skills
  • Teamwork
  • Community engagement
  • Professionalism

Volunteering helps students:

  • Explore healthcare and community settings
  • Understand social determinants of health
  • Network and build meaningful relationships
  • Develop communication and leadership skills
  • Gain exposure to diverse populations
  • Reflect on healthcare disparities and access
  • Strengthen applications and interviews

Organizations such as the Association of American Medical Colleges emphasize service orientation as a core competency for future healthcare professionals.

Research Experiences

Discover. Investigate. Innovate.

Research is one of the most impactful experiences a pre-health student can pursue during their undergraduate education.

At Augusta University, students have the opportunity to work alongside faculty mentors, contribute to real-world discoveries, explore healthcare challenges, and develop the critical thinking skills needed for success in professional school and beyond. Whatever your interests, undergraduate research can help you deepen your academic experience and strengthen your professional goals.

How to Get Started In Research

Explore Your Interests

Students should begin by identifying areas they are curious about. You do NOT need to know exactly what you want to study before getting involved.

Connect with CURS

Students are encouraged to schedule an appointment with CURS. CURS specifically assists students in identifying mentors and getting involved in undergraduate scholarship.

Reach Out to Faculty

Faculty are often looking for motivated undergraduate students to join research teams.

Start Early

Students do not need to wait until junior or senior year to get involved. Starting early allows students to build long-term mentorships and gain deeper experience over time.

Work Experience

Gain Experience Beyond the Classroom

Work experience can be an excellent way for pre-health students to gain professional skills, healthcare exposure, and insight into patient care while earning an income during their undergraduate education.

At Augusta University, students are uniquely positioned within one of Georgia’s largest healthcare hubs, creating opportunities to explore healthcare-related employment across hospitals, clinics, rehabilitation facilities, community health organizations, and private practices throughout Augusta and the CSRA.

While most health profession programs strongly recommend or require exposure to healthcare through activities such as shadowing or clinical volunteering, work experience is generally not required for admission to most health profession programs; with the notable exception of many Physician Assistant (PA) programs.

However, healthcare-related work experience can provide substantial benefits for students pursuing careers in healthcare.
