In the Emergency Medicine program at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, we place an emphasis on scholarly activity in our program.
Faculty from our Department have received numerous grants and frequently present at national and international meetings. We have faculty with numerous and diverse research interests such as: Ultrasound, Hemorrhage Control, Disaster Medicine, HIV, Influenza, Airway Management, and Public Health. We also collaborate on research activities with other Departments in the Medical College of Georgia and the other Schools and Discovery Institutes. Research in Emergency Medicine encompasses many different disciplines and cross-cutting themes, and critical research questions may cut across basic science, clinical care, and delivery systems. Research activity within the Department of Emergency Medicine at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University continues to grow and flourish.
Apart from simply being an ACGME requirement, we feel that knowledge and experience acquired in the research arena will result in a more complete emergency medicine physician at the end of the training process. As such, residents are strongly encouraged to begin investigating potential areas of research interest during the earliest days of training and our department has numerous resources to assist residents in the process.
Our residents present frequently at national conferences such as ACEP. As an extra incentive, the residency reimburses up to $1000 for conference attendance when research is presented!
Robert Gibson, PhD, an accomplished researcher, was recruited in 2014 to be our departmental Research Director. He also serves as the Chairman of MCG's Institutional Review Board. Our faculty have broad interests and are actively engaged in the production of peer reviewed research. Some of the most active current areas of focus include emergency ultrasound, hemostatic agents, HIV and sickle cell.
