Block 9

Clinical Experience Block 9

The PCL Clinical Experience includes: Telemedicine Patient Experience Session, Clinical Procedures Session, and Ultrasound Session. 

Arrive no later than 12:50 p.m. on your scheduled PCL Clinical Experience session or you are at risk for losing professionalism points. Bring your personal computer and stethoscope.

Telemedicine Encounters (1:00 or 1:50 start) 

  • The interviewer will be conducting the encounter while the scribe observes.
  • Complete the SOAP Presentation Debrief Qualtrics form with a faculty member during your debrief session.

FAST Practicum

  • Six (6) students at a time
  • Those of you not doing the practicum will have other rooms to practice image acquisition or
  • Meet with Dr. Broughton to review note documentation

TELEMEDICINE PATIENT ENCOUNTER

REFRESH

  • Review Medical Student Note Writing 
  • Review 'Follow up' Chronic Issue Note
  • EMR Training:
    • Review EMR Training Videos: If you have not completed a medicine history reconciliation or updated social history of your patient, please attempt to do so during this block. 
    • NOTE:  CPA is scheduled during Block 11 for those who do not receive a 2.5-3 on your feedback from Block 9 or 10. Please use the resources below to help you pass.
  • Review Note Template Documentation Video (recommend playing at 1.5-2X speed)
    • PCL Note Template with minor additions to assist with chronic disease/ primary care note documentation
    • SP Note from Block 7 NAFLD Example

PREWORK REQUIRED

  • Review your patient's medical history and prepare for your telehealth visit
  • Recommend choosing a chronic neurologic issue to review if possible (Example: Migraines, Neuropathy, CVA history, seizures)
  • Telehealth Physical Exams: Neurological - Old Dominion University
    • May focus on Cranial Nerve Exam this block as will have same pre-work exam video for block 10 where can review a more comprehensive neuro telehealth exam
  • Review Telemedicine Coding Video - Dr. Robbie Broughton

 POSTWORK

  • Complete your patient's note by 5:00 PM the day after your patient encounter and sign/submit your note to Clinical Experience Preceptor for signature and PCL preceptor as a reviewer. If you have an SP encounter, send note to PCL preceptor  and partner in email for feedback. 
  • Once you note is sent to your Clinical Experience Preceptor, fill out Staff Documentation Qualtrics Survey to receive documentation feedback.
  • Complete the Class of 2027 PCL Clinical Experience Post-Visit Survey by August 7 at 11:30pm.

  • NOTE: Choose optional reading based on your chronic or acute issue discussed with patient as well as screening condition you decide to cover. 
  • Symptoms to Diagnose: Part 20 Headache (Migraine Headaches 20-14)
  • In the Clinic: Migraines, 2017
  • In the Clinic: Concussion, 2018
  • In the Clinic: Dementia, 2019
  • In the Clinic: Multiple Sclerosis, 2021

CLINICAL PROCEDURES 

PREWORK REQUIRED

  • COMPLETE YOUR BLS MODULE PRIOR TO YOUR CLINIC DAY!!!! Print your certificate and bring it with you to a lab.
    • You MUST do this unless given an exception by PCE staff, even if you have a current BLS certification.
    • If you do NOT complete your module and bring your certificate, you will have to re-do your practical experience with the AHA center (2nd floor CJ) at a cost of $70 (paid by you).
