TRACK RECORD OF SUCCESS

Our four-year residency program is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Our department is committed to fostering a collegial and supportive learning environment in which residents develop the knowledge, clinical skills, and professional foundation necessary for a successful career in obstetrics and gynecology.

We have a strong track record of preparing graduates for independent practice across a variety of career paths, including academic medicine, research, private practice, and subspecialty fellowship training. In addition to their clinical responsibilities, our residents play an important role as teachers and mentors, serving as role models for the next generation of physicians at one of the nation’s oldest and largest medical schools.

Founded in 1828, the Medical College of Georgia is the 13th-oldest medical school in the United States and ranks among the nation’s largest medical schools by class size. Our residents have the unique opportunity to learn and teach within this distinguished institution while contributing to its longstanding tradition of excellence in medical education.

NATIONALLY RANKED RESEARCH

Augusta University is a leader in basic, translational, and clinical research. The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology has a strong record of research excellence, ranking #26 nationally in NIH funding among OB/GYN departments in 2025, with more than $4.4 million in NIH support. Research is an integral component of our residency education. Residents are paired with experienced faculty mentors and encouraged to pursue research that aligns with their clinical and academic interests. Additionally, we have a dedicated GME Clinical Research Nurse, who guides and assists our residents with their research endeavors. 

Our residents have presented their work at regional and national meetings and have contributed to peer-reviewed publications across a broad range of topics, including reproductive medicine and genetics, gynecologic oncology, obstetric and gynecologic imaging, perinatal mental health, medical student education and mentorship, and advances in obstetric surgical techniques.

Through these experiences, residents develop the skills to critically evaluate medical literature, apply evidence-based medicine to patient care, and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of our field. We believe this foundation in scholarship and lifelong learning prepares our graduates for success in academic medicine, private practice, fellowship training, and beyond.

EXCELLENCE IN SIMULATION

Augusta University is home to a state-of-the-art, nearly 30,000-square-foot simulation center equipped with advanced technology to support training across a wide range of clinical scenarios. In our newly renovated simulation laboratory, residents participate in a structured laparoscopic skills curriculum adapted for Obstetrics & Gynecology from the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) program.

Following successful completion of the laparoscopic skills program, residents progress to a competency-based robotic surgery curriculum, preparing them for the growing role of minimally invasive surgery in modern practice. Advanced robotic training is performed on Augusta University Health’s da Vinci Xi HD dual-console surgical system with simulator capabilities.

COMPREHENSIVE EDUCATION

The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology provides comprehensive training in all aspects of general obstetrics and gynecology, as well as exposure to subspecialty care in Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM), Gynecologic Oncology (GYNONC), Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI), Genetics, and Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery (URPS).

Our four-year curriculum is designed to provide progressive, hands-on experience across each of these areas, with rotations tailored to the resident’s level of training. Residents gain experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings, developing the knowledge, clinical judgment, and procedural skills necessary for independent practice.

INNOVATION IN EDUCATION

Our program is committed to evolving with the changing landscape of graduate medical education (GME) and has embraced innovative approaches that go beyond traditional standards of residency training. These initiatives include expanded use of both low- and high-fidelity simulation to develop obstetric and gynecologic skills; dedicated laparoscopic and robotic simulation training; mock oral examinations; structured education in women’s health advocacy; and longitudinal learning modules modeled after the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) Maintenance of Certification framework.

At the heart of our educational philosophy is a commitment to preparing residents not only for success during residency, but for a lifetime of learning and professional growth. We strive to equip our residents with the skills, adaptability, and confidence to thrive throughout their careers—not simply the knowledge required to advance to the next stage of training.

GLOBAL HEALTH

In the 2012–2013 academic year, the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology established its Global Health Program in Women’s Health. Over the years, the program has developed extensive experience providing residents with meaningful global health education and immersive international clinical experiences. Residents have the opportunity to participate in this unique experience as part of their training, with support from the department and institution designed to minimize or eliminate the cost to participating residents.

In partnership with Dr. Daron Ferris, President and Founder of CerviCusco, our residents gain both didactic and hands-on clinical experience in global women’s health, with a particular focus on diseases that disproportionately affect women in underserved populations. Located in Cusco, Peru, CerviCusco is a Peruvian nonprofit organization dedicated to providing high-quality medical care, with a particular emphasis on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of pre-invasive disease of the female genital tract. Peru has among the highest rates of cervical cancer in the world, making it an important setting for education and service in women’s health.

The mission of the Augusta University Global Health Program in Obstetrics & Gynecology is to increase awareness of global health disparities affecting women, provide opportunities for international medical and surgical education, foster meaningful collaboration and research, and deliver high-quality care to underserved communities. Through this experience, residents develop a deeper understanding of the challenges facing women’s health globally while gaining valuable clinical skills and perspectives that enrich their training and inform their future practice.

CerviCusco also partners with the International Cervical Cancer Foundation (INCCA), a nonprofit organization of medical professionals committed to reducing the burden of cervical cancer and improving women’s health outcomes in underserved populations worldwide.

Residents and faculty share a strong, collegial relationship built on collaboration, mentorship, and camaraderie as we work together toward a common goal.
