Protected Education Time

One morning each week is dedicated to resident education. The first week is dedicated to high-risk obstetric education, the second week to subspecialties, the third week is dedicated to the gynecology and the fourth week to simulation training. Lecturers may be resident or attending physicians. Residents are occasionally expected to lecture, as a significant part of residency is comprised of teaching medical students and eventually junior residents when one advances through the program.

Residents and faculty are expected to participate in Journal Club. Residents present and critique current and past journal articles. Journal Club offers the resident significant training in how to read an article critically, and improves resident understanding of statistics commonly employed in journal articles.

Augusta University's Simulation lab enables resident training on birthing and Maternal Simulators. Drills of various nature may be run with the simulators, and resident education is significantly advanced with there use. In addition running drills with the simulator, other obstetrics drills are run in the department. Residents are expected to lead these drills in an effort to advance their education and leadership skills. Examples of drills include postpartum hemorrhage and shoulder dystocia.
