Dr. Sharad Ghamande joined the Obstetrics and Gynecology faculty in 2000. He began his studies in 1985 at the Seth G.S. Medical College in Bombay, India with a focus on General Obstetrics & Gynecology.  He went on to specialize in gynecologic Oncology and has become a champion in his fight against gynecologic cancer. Dr. Ghamande is also Principal Investigator for the Minority NCORP at Augusta University (AU), one of 12 sites within the United States. He believes that clinical trials and health care delivery research leads the way to improvements in patient’s outcomes in quality of life and survival.  As an oncologist, he has always strived to bring new options to our patients, educate them about the process and empower them to make choices that could better their care, and perhaps advance progress in cancer treatments.  In Augusta, over 40% of our patients are African American (AA) in origin and are often underserved.  The new NCORP M/U grant will help all us in getting these patients into clinical trials.   He has established successful clinical relationships with Augusta Oncology Associates where he sees patients there and enroll them on clinical trials. He is very active in the state of Georgia trying to improve cancer care with the Board of Georgia Core, which has a mandate to improve cancer care education and access to clinical trials throughout the state of Georgia.  He is also on the board of Georgia Society of Clinical Oncology (GASCO) as a voice to represent oncology to the state legislature.  At the national level, Dr. Ghamande is involved with the Society of Gynecologic Oncology (SGO) and on the coding committee. He continues to be and invited speaker both national and international conferences for gynecologic oncology. He continues to be included in the Castle Connolly Top Doctors Guide and America’s top Doctors for Cancer.

In 2004, Dr. Ghamande and staff put together what is now the CSRA Cancer Support Group where patients, families, caregivers have an opportunity to learn about gynecologic cancer and share their thoughts on living with cancer.
