The Division of Gynecological Oncology at the Medical College of Georgia is driven by one and only one objective, which is to give the best state of the art care to patients with gynecological cancer in a compassionate way.

We believe that our patients should have access to the best possible treatment choices in the country, including the latest novel therapeutic options. The section of Gynecologic Oncology is one of the most active sites in the southeast part of the United States in terms of offering a variety of national and international clinical trials to the patients. These include trials through the Gynecologic Oncology group, which is affiliated with the National Cancer Institute and also trials with various pharmaceutical companies. We also do "First in Humans" phase 1 trials with the clinical trials unit.

We also offer the choice of minimally invasive surgery to patients with cancer of the cervix or the uterus and use the da Vinci robotic system. This enables patients to have a cancer operation without a large incision, with a less than 24-hour hospital stay, and with quicker recovery as compared to conventional surgery.
We offer the option of a wonderful support group for women with gynecologic cancers. We have a "buddy system," wherein a newly diagnosed patient with ovarian cancer can talk to another patient with a similar cancer that has gone through identical treatments. Many patients have felt their anxiety and fear greatly reduced by such interactions.
In the United States, more than 80,000 women are diagnosed with some form of gynecologic cancer per year. Ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, and endometrial cancer are among the most common types of gynecologic cancers. Each type of gynecologic cancer is characterized by different warning signs, risk factors, and treatment options. As with any type of cancer, early detection is crucial. Visiting your gynecologist annually and knowing your family history may reduce your risk significantly.

It is truly a privilege for our staff to take care of women with gynecological cancers, and we strive to individualize this therapy in a family-centered fashion.
