Specialty Clinics

The Division of Rheumatology at Augusta University maintains several specialty/ interdisciplinary clinics that offer top-notch care to a variety of Rheumatological issues.

Specialty and Multidisciplinary Clinics

Sarcoidosis Clinic

The multi-specialty sarcoidosis clinic, co-led by Drs. Javaid, Taskar (Pulmonology) and Hines (Cardiology), was created to provide patients with a comprehensive and collaborative evaluation. We offer advanced imaging and pharmacotherapy options to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of sarcoidosis. Our interdisciplinary approach to the management of this systemic disease assists in achieving our goal of optimal health outcomes for our patients.

Uveitis Clinic

The uveitis clinic, co-led by Drs. Oliver and Espinosa-Heidmann (Ophthalmology), is a multi-specialty clinic shared between Rheumatology and Ophthalmology.  Inflammatory diseases of the eye including uveitis and scleritis are diagnosed and treated with immunosuppressive medications. Individuals are examined holistically to identify associated systemic conditions that may be related to their underlying eye inflammation. This physician partnership allows point of care decision-making for diagnosis and treatment.

Systemic Lupus Clinic

The lupus clinic, co-led by Drs. Rolle and Shi, is a team of experts dedicated to providing timely, comprehensive and multidisciplinary state-of-the-art care for the diagnosis and treatment of patients with suspected and established lupus . Our mission is to meet the specific needs of lupus patients, to participate and collaborate in research studies to advance the care of patients with lupus, and to raise awareness of lupus by advancing the education of trainees, physician, and allied health professionals in the early recognition and evaluation of patients with suspected lupus.

Systemic Sclerosis Clinic

The systemic sclerosis clinic, co-led by Drs. Schiopu and Taskar (Pulmonary), focuses on patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) with interstitial lung disease (ILD) and pulmonary hypertension (PAH). Our goal is to develop our longitudinal registry, focus on disease history data in African American SSc patients, and engage actively in clinical trials in SSc and SSc-ILD. We aim to train rheumatology and pulmonary fellows in this area, while actively partnering with the Scleroderma Foundation and our patients and their families.

Myositis Clinic

The Myositis clinic, co-led by Drs. Schiopu and Barnes (Neuromuscular Neurology), focuses on the diagnosis, classification, and treatment of patients with Idiopathic Inflammatory Myopathies. While establishing a longitudinal registry, the clinic is cross-training learners in IIMs, recruitment for clinical trials, and combining the neurological and inflammatory expertise. The overall focus would be to be an active part of myositis outcome measures development, new drug therapies, and offering a comprehensive resource to patients and families affected by inflammatory myopathies.
