FSO Services

Fire Safety Management

The FSO manages fire and life safety for all Augusta University campuses, regularly conducting the following services around campus:

  • Fire Code Inspections: We inspect all Augusta University buildings, room-by-room, for fire code violations. Every campus building is inspected annually.

Fire Safety Inspection Checklist

  • Hazardous Surveillance Surveys: Campus buildings are divided into different areas/zones, with each area requiring quarterly or monthly surveys. Special requirements dictate the frequency of surveys for common areas.
  • Special Surveys: Some surveys must be conducted with outside agencies (such as a State Fire Marshal) on an as-needed basis. These include inspections of Dedicated Outdoor Air System (DOAS) HVACs, and sidewalk and grounds safety surveys. Additional surveys include wide-spread code deficiency project

Deficiency Resolutions

When the results of fire code inspections, hazard surveillance surveys, and special survey have been evaluated, a Plan of Action will be created. A Plan of Action outlines the deficiency, its location, the person(s) responsible for the correction, an estimated completion date (if applicable), and corrective measure options.

Fire Code Compliance

Through information collected from various source processes, we identify and recommend correction for known code/standard deficiencies.

Life Safety Management

Fire Drills

The FSO is required to perform fire exit drills regularly in all Augusta University campus buildings. The drills are used to measure fire readiness and to inform fire safety education programs.

  • Clinics and lab buildings require a minimum of one drill per shift a quarter.
  • Student housing requires one drill per semester, during the school year.
  • Day care requires monthly drills.
  • All other AU buildings perform annual drills.

Fire Systems Monitoring and Tracking

We monitor the readiness of campus fire alarms, sprinkler systems, and suppression systems. We also track fire system equipment, zones, and components that are out-of-service. We check routinely to identify building areas that are unprotected or non-compliant.

Any required inspection, testing, or maintenance is handled by university Facilities Services. All outages are coordinated through a Facilities management work order.

Fire Extinguishers

We are in charge of maintaining a working fire extinguisher system, this includes managing approximately 1900 extinguishers throughout Augusta University. The sensitive areas are inspected monthly. The other campus areas are inspected quarterly. The required maintenance processes have been outsourced to a private vendor coordinated by the Fire Safety Office. When maintenance costs exceed the purchase price of new equipment, a fire extinguisher will be replaced.

Fire Safety Education

We offer fire safety education during:

  • New Employee Orientation
  • EHS Laboratory Safety Classes
  • Safety Cluster Programs include computer video presentations.
  • Student, patient, visitor, and contractor safety education programs.

Accident and Injury Reporting

FSO is responsible for the reporting, reviewing, investigating (if applicable), initiating a corrective action (if needed), and trending of all accident/injury reports that involve employees who are:

  • Injured but not treated
  • Injured and treated
  • Injured with lost time from work
  • Showing no injury, but reported anyway. Although these incidents are handled separately, we record any reported "incident" of an injury that happens on our property.

We maintain a computerized record of these reports and provide statistical reports for distribution.

Construction Oversight

Augusta University is continuously looking to grow and improve. The FSO works to make sure AU complies with all fire safety standards for buildings and structures on campus.

  • Renovation Project Review: We are available for consultation and to review construction and renovation project plans; this includes physical building changes and changes to new/existing practices.
  • Interim Life Safety Management (ILSM): We manage and provide additional safety measures to any area impacted by a modernization, renovation, or construction projects. Our services include touring (daily) the affected area, erecting barricades, posting signs, securing areas, temporary smoke detection, coordinating a fire watch, and educating affected staff.
  • Safety Follow-up Services: When needed, we will follow-up on maintenance jobs, renovation, and construction projects to verify that the work has been done completely and properly.
