PATH-5014: Off Campus Special Elective

 

Location : Off campus pathology laboratory.

Enrollment : 1 Max

Prequisites : Phase II

Duration : 4 weeks or longer

Months Offered : All

Goals : Introduce students to the community practice of anatomic and clinical pathology.
Allow students to develop skills in the diagnostic aspects of pathology.

Objectives : These vary with the off-campus site chosen but typically include one or more of the following:

■ Gain knowledge regarding the processing and interpretation of surgical and cytologic specimens.

■ Participate in the performance and reporting of autopsies.

■ Understand the operation of a clinical diagnostic laboratory so as to promote optimal utilization of laboratory testing.

■ Appreciate the regulatory and management aspects of a pathology laboratory.

Activities : As assigned by outside facility.

Assessment : By the supervising faculty member in the laboratory where the off-campus elective is taken.

Note: Written approval must be obtained in advance from the Medical College of Georgia Department of Pathology and the department where the elective is to be taken. A description of the off-campus elective, including name(s) of the supervising faculty member(s), must be submitted to the Medical College of Georgia Department of Pathology before approval to take the elective. In addition, a letter of evaluation with specific comments regarding the student's performance and a brief description of the work completed must be received from the supervising faculty member in the department where the off-campus elective is taken.
