Otolaryngology Residency Program

Learn About Our Residency Program

Thank you for your interest in the Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery residency program at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.

The Medical College of Georgia

Established in 1828, the Medical College of Georgia is the 13th oldest and 8th largest medical school in the United States. MCG is Georgia's flagship medical school and has campuses that span the entire state. In fact, 1 in 5 physicians in the state of Georgia either went to medical school or completed residency at MCG. The medical college is part of Augusta University, a growing and vibrant research university born out of the merger of MCG with Augusta State University in 2012. Obviously, the school has a huge impact on our state, but the Department of Otolaryngology’s mission seeks to spread that influence nationally and internationally.

Residency Details

The Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery residency program offers a broad range of clinical and academic experiences designed to produce world class otolaryngologists.

The residents spend time in three hospitals including the 478-bed Augusta University Medical Center including its affiliated ambulatory medical offices and comprehensive cancer center, the 154-bed Children’s Hospital of Georgia, and the neighboring 155-bed Charlie Norwood Veterans Affairs Medical Center. AUMC is the 13-county region’s only Level-1 pediatric and adult trauma center, and CHOG is the region’s only children’s hospital.

The residency is a five-year program and includes intensive exposure to the medical and surgical management of all facets of our specialty including head and neck cancer, otology, sinus and skull base disease, facial plastics and reconstruction, head and neck endocrine surgery, laryngology, pediatric otolaryngology, allergy, pathology, audiology and a 4-month dedicated research block. Our association with the departments and colleges at the former Augusta State University also provide ample opportunity for interdisciplinary research in the fields of business, education and music.

The majority of the activities of our residents are in the clinical setting, and we feel that the surgical experience of our residents is second to none. Our residents are also active participants in research and all graduate with multiple publications and presentations at national meetings. Over the last 10 years 60 percent of our graduates have chosen to pursue top-flight fellowships and academic practice in various subspecialties including pediatric otolaryngology, head and neck microvascular reconstructive surgery, head and neck endocrine surgery, facial plastic surgery, general plastic surgery, and laryngology/airway reconstructive surgery. Other graduates work in highly successful private practice settings across Georgia and beyond.

Our residents are the best part of this program. They are a dedicated and cohesive group of people who work hard, take great care of patients, and have fun doing it. In 2015 we were approved to increase our resident complement to 13, with a 3-2-3-2-3 structure. We are matching two applicants this year. Applications to our program are handled through the AAMC’s Electronic Residency Application system, or ERAS. We anticipate receiving over 250 applications and plan to interview about 45-50 of these outstanding applicants.

Application Process

We are pleased that you are interested in our program and encourage you to apply through the ERAS system early once applications open. Also, Prospective candidates must be eligible for J-1 Sponsorship by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates, or possess a valid U.S. Permanent Resident Card, or valid Employment Authorization Document (EAD). All international medical graduates must also hold a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

About Augusta

Augusta, Georgia is a beautiful mid-sized city on the banks of the Savannah River that offers an eclectic blend of big-city amenities with smaller-town ambiance. The Augusta area, which has a population of more than a half million, hosts multiple interesting cultural events every year including the Arts in the Heart Festival, the Westobou Festival, Beer Fest, The Augusta Futurity, and the largest Half-Ironman race in America.

The city is also growing. With the relocation of all of the Department of Defense’s cyberwarfare personnel to the newly constructed Cyber Command at nearby Fort Gordon, there has been a tremendous influx of young people and businesses driving loads of positive momentum for the city. There is an ever-increasing number of excellent restaurants and bars and the concert scene gets better every year. Opportunities for outdoor activities abound, including boating, fishing and skiing on nearby Clark’s Hill Lake, jogging or biking along the historic Augusta Canal, or paddling the Savannah River in a kayak. Augusta is also home to the famous Masters Tournament, one of professional golf's four majors of the year. It’s an increasingly fun and exciting place to live and a great place for singles and young families alike.
