Clinical training occurs in one hospital, The Children’s Hospital of Georgia. The average volume is 30,000. We see children up to 21 years old. Our hospital is
considered an urban teaching hospital. We are the only children’s emergency department
that provides 24/7 services within a 150 mile radius. We are an ACS Level II pediatric
trauma center. We operate out of 20 rooms in a designated area exclusively designed
for pediatric patients. We are contiguous with the adult emergency department and
can flex our space accordingly. Our dedicated nursing staff are all PALS certified
and several with TNCC and EPNC certification.
Our faculty have been dedicated and motivated over the years and are frequently recognized
by the institution for their teaching excellence in both resident and student teaching.

Fellows are not considered primary workforce and quickly function as mentors and teachers
to junior learners. The volume of the emergency department allows for a pace conducive
to learning and concentrating on the ill patient.
There are a number of methods available to gain skill in low volume, critical procedures.
Fellows will do 1 - 2 months in our 15 bed pediatric intensive care unit and 1 month
in the largest burn unit east of the Mississippi. Additionally, there are live pig
labs, cadaver labs and the use of our high fidelity simulation lab. Additional experience to pediatric fellows in the adult trauma and emergency medicine
departments.
We have a pediatric emergency medicine ultrasound fellowship being led by a trained pediatric emergency medicine fellowship trained physician.
For those who are interested, ultrasound is easily accessible is becoming routine
part of the care of pediatric patients in our emergency department.
If you are trained in emergency medicine as your primary field, during your fellowship,
you will be able to maintain your adult skills by serving as clinical faculty within
the emergency department for one or two shifts a month.
The department enjoys a robust research environment with primary areas of focus in
resuscitation, ultrasound, disaster medicine and pre- hospital science. (Research) There are supportive research personnel and chair to help with fellow, faculty and
resident success in research and board requirements.
There are expectations for fellows to become excellent teachers upon completion of
this program. There are a number of opportunities to perfect this skill in local and
regional venues.
Fellows have the opportunity to expand their interests through exposure to other fellowships
and programs within the department . These include wilderness, ems, event and tactical
medicine, clinical ultrasound. (Fellowships)
