Daniel Kaminstein MD, DTM&H, FACEP

Dr. Kaminstein is a graduate of Thomas Jefferson University. He completed his emergency medicine residency at the Medical College of Georgia in 2010. Following residency he pursued dual fellowship training in both ultrasound and international medicine at MCG. He received a diploma in tropical medicine from the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene in 2011. After working in community practice for the past four years Dr. Kaminstein joined the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University in January of 2016 to serve in a clinician educator role. He is extensively involved in ultrasound training and research globally and serves as co-director of several ultrasound training courses in Africa and South America. His primary research interest is the application of ultrasound in the evaluation of tropical infectious diseases. As a member of the Center for Ultrasound Education he remains passionate about advancing clinician ultrasound both in the United States and around the globe.

Hartmut Gross, MD, FACEP

Dr. Gross graduated from the University of Alabama School of Medicine in 1985 and completed an Emergency Medicine Residency in 1992 at the Medical College of Georgia. Dr. Gross also trained for 4 years as a General Surgery Resident. Dr. Gross is the Director of International and Event Medicine in the Center of Operational Medicine and Co-Director of the International Medicine Fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University.  Being involved with the International Medicine Program, Dr. Gross has spent many hours providing medical care to the needy in areas of the world where medical care is unavailable.  Destinations have included Honduras, Mexico, Belize, El Salvador, Ecuador, Peru, Trinidad, Haiti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Guinea, and The Gambia- He has been to many of these more than once.  He has instructed in the Advanced Medical Leadership Training course which is hosted in different countries in the Western hemisphere for some 15 years.  Dr. Gross is co-editor and co-author of Global Medical Missions: Preparation, Procedure, and Practice.  He also attended the Asian Clinical Tropical Medicine course in Bangkok, Thailand as well as two short courses on Parasitology and Malaria at the London School of Tropical Medicine in England.  Dr. Gross is also Clerkship Director for the International Medicine Elective (EMED 5007) at MCG.  As Director of Event Medicine Dr. Gross oversees activities such as Masters Golf Tournament, Aiken Steeplechase, Augusta Ironman, Boshears Skyfest, Augusta Southern Nationals Drag Boat Races, and many more.  Dr. Dr. Gross also serves on the MedWAR Council and has been an asset to the MedWAR activities for the past 15 years.  Dr. Gross spends much of his time as a Telemedicine physician.  Reaching out across the state of Georgia assisting physicians in rural EDs using the REACH (Remote Evaluation of Acute isCHemic stroke) process, Dr. Gross performs acute telestroke consultations.  In short, he tries to expand his practice outside the 4 walls of the ED, wherever possible.

An area of particular interest is entomology and medical entomology. 


Pamela Tipler, DO, FACP
Director of Internal Medicine Residency Simulation Program

Dr. Tipler is a graduate of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.  She completed her internal medicine residency at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, WA in 2012.  Following residency, she attended the Army Flight Surgeon program at Ft. Rucker, AL and then deployed to Egypt for 1 year as a Flight Surgeon.  After deployment, she completed her active duty service at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Ft. Gordon, GA.  She transitioned off of active duty to pursue more work in global health.  After completing service in the Army, Dr. Tipler joined the faculty of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University in June of 2016 to serve in a clinician educator role.  She is extensively involved in the internal medicine residency as an inpatient ward attending and as the residency medical simulation program director.  Her primary interest lies in serving internationally delivering medical care to remote villages.

Countries: currently Guatemala, intentions in Peru and Macedonia, previously Egypt and Puerto Rico. 

 

 

 

 


Joshua M. Thomas, MD, DTM&H         
Assistant Professor, Department of Emergency Medicine

jthomasDr. Thomas is a graduate of The Medical College of Georgia. He completed his emergency medicine residency at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in 2013. Following residency, he pursued fellowship training in International Medicine at The Medical College of Georgia.  He earned a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in Lima Peru in 2014. Dr. Thomas joined the Medical College of Georgia after completing fellowship training where he continues to be involved in student education in addition to leading several trips per year to the developing world primarily through Medical Campus Outreach, an on campus student ministry.  Dr. Thomas also works full time in a private practice hospital where he is the Director of Ultrasound.  His primary medical interest is in clinical tropical medicine.  He has had the opportunity to train and provide care in numerous countries throughout the world.  Dr. Thomas typically travels and practices with his wife Christy, a Family Medicine physician, and is always looking forward to the next trip.
