Internship Program

An internship will set you apart from other candidates when you apply for positions because you will have demonstrated skills necessary for the job. In addition to demonstrated skills you will also have references who can speak to your work ethic and level of expertise. This is a great way to cultivate your network not to mention obtain course credits towards graduation!

Students with an F-1 visa can participate in an internship as it is a requirement of graduation in the Hull College of Business. Augusta University has a webpage dedicated to providing information to students with an F-1 visa.

The Career and Academic Planning Center (CAP Center) in the Hull College of Business (Allgood Hall, N112) is the perfect place to start! Work with your Coordinator of Business Programs & Internships (Jennifer Mansell) to research internship opportunities, build a search strategy, create a resume and/or cover letter, prepare for the interview and complete applicable requirements to receive course credit for your internship.

Once you have accepted an internship, create an "experience" in Handshake to request course credit. Once your internship is approved you will receive permission in the system to enroll in BUSA/ACCT 4960.

Students should be prepared to submit an “experience” in Handshake by midterm of the semester prior to beginning their internship to ensure they have time to complete the approval process. The process can take up to 6 weeks (or longer) to complete depending on the complexity of the internship, project deliverables, evaluating academic components, and completing memorandum of understandings (MOUs) where needed.

The completion of the "experience" request and the approval of the internship are required to receive permission from the Hull College of Business to enroll in BUSA/ACCT 4960.

Per the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), an internship will need to meet the following requires to be approved for course credit.

1. The internship must be an extension of the classroom. A learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the classroom. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or do work that a regular employee would routinely perform.
2. The skills or knowledge learned must be transferrable to other employment settings.
3. The experience has a defined beginning and end, along with a job description which includes desired qualifications.
4. There are clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the professional goals of the student’s academic coursework.
5. There is supervision by a professional with expertise and/or education in the field of the experience.
6. Routine feedback by the experienced supervisor is provided to the student.
7. There are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the employer that support the learning objectives/goals.

1. Complete 120 hours to receive 3 credits for the course (12 hours/week x 10 weeks).
2. Meet the work schedule agreed upon by the employer and the intern.
3. Meet the work requirements as stated in the job description agreed upon at the start of the internship between the employer and the student in a timely and accurate manner.
4. Complete all academic assignments made by the faculty supervisor.
5. Submit all evaluation forms to the faculty supervisor by the designated due date.
6. Treat the internship like a professional job.
7. Dress appropriately and display professionalism at all times.
8. Follow the rules established by the employer/workplace; if employer rules are not followed (ie. tardiness, attendance, etc.) progressive disciplinary action may be required and possible termination occur. If the student intern is terminated from their internship, the student will receive an “F” in the course.

• Plan ahead… BUSA/ACCT 4960 will require prior permission from the course instructor to enroll.
• BUSA/ACCT 4960 is billed like any other course.
• For summer internships, request a fee waiver from the Coordinator of Business Programs (James Mayes) if you do not plan to take on-campus classes. The fee waiver is only applicable if you are not enrolled in a course that meets on campus.
