Speakers to take the stage with stories of purpose, transformation
"Augusta University has quite literally changed my life. It gave me the environment I needed to grow into a professional and become a stronger leader," says Alex Gonzalo.
Studying mathematics trains students to analyze problems and to think logically, skills that are transferable to virtually any career. The College of Science and Mathematics’s Department of Mathematics offers students many career pathways to help you reach your goals.
A degree in Mathematics can be a pathway to employment in either the public or private sector, such as data science, actuarial science, financial consultant, or risk assessor, a career in teaching, or advanced study in graduate and professional programs. Additionally, a mathematics major paired with a careful course plan of foundational science classes can prepare students for medical school – in fact, math majors consistently have high MCAT scores and higher-than-average success rates when applying to medical school. Similar paths exist for those interested in law school. It is important to remember that graduate studies in mathematics are usually paid for through teaching assistantships.

What You'll Study
In the Mathematics program, you’ll take a wide range of math classes culminating in a capstone project.
A new degree pathway in Actuarial Science is a gateway to in-demand, high-paying jobs in the private sector, and students majoring in other STEM fields will find that a double major or a minor in mathematics may align with their primary major.
Experience-based Education
The Euclidean Society is a student organization that provides undergraduates with
opportunities to explore careers and pathways in mathematics. Additionally, Augusta
University hosts the Georgia Lambda chapter of Pi Mu Epsilon (PME), the national honor
society for mathematics, dedicated to promoting scholarly activity in mathematics.
Students interested in undergraduate research will find many potential mentors in
the department with research interests in both pure mathematics, applied mathematics,
statistics, and actuarial science. Support for summer research activities is available
from the Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship (CURS).
Whether you’re an undergraduate or graduate student, you’ll have opportunities to create your own research projects or work with faculty to tackle some of the world’s most complex and pressing challenges.
A new, state-of-the-art building with 22 teaching labs, a tutoring center and a top floor dedicated to research is located on the Health Sciences Campus, maximizing educational and research opportunities.
An option in Actuarial Science, 4 + 1 programs (BS and MS in 5 years) with Biostatistics and Data Science.
A tutoring center specifically for science and math students is located on the Health Sciences Campus, with similar help also offered at the Academic Success Center on the Summerville Campus.
Your Future
Graduates from the Mathematics program pursue careers as actuaries, systems analysts, statisticians, and economists, or they can continue their education in graduate or professional programs, such as those in the mathematical sciences, medical school, or law school.
According to the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual wage for mathematicians was $121,680 in May 2024. The median annual wage for statisticians was $103,300 in May 2024, and overall employment of mathematicians and statisticians is projected to grow 8 percent from 2024 to 2034, much faster than the average for all occupations. The median salary for actuaries is $105,900 per year, with growth projected to increase by 25% over the next 5 years.
About 2,200 openings for mathematicians and statisticians are projected each year on average over the decade. Many of those openings are expected to result from the need to replace workers who transfer to other occupations or exit the labor force as retirees.

A new building in the heart of the Health Sciences Campus puts Mathematics students in the middle of the university’s research enterprise, maximizing opportunities for internships and mentorships.
A full range of student support services exist to make sure that students have the opportunity to find assistance, advice or mentorship.
As Georgia’s only Health Sciences Center of Excellence, students are on a campus with graduate programs in health care fields and research for those interested in continuing their academic journey.
