AU Health

AU Health is the health system of Augusta University, offering the highest level of primary and specialty care in the region. Augusta University includes the clinical services operated by AU Health and the physicians and health services provided through the MCG, Allied Health Sciences, Dentistry, Nursing, and the Physicians Practice Group.

A major component are the hospitals and clinics, operated by AU Health. A tertiary referral center for Georgia and the region, Augusta University offers a full spectrum of medical and health services in a family- and patient-centered environment. As the teaching hospital of the Augusta University, AU Health includes a 520-bed hospital, Ambulatory Care Center with over 80 outpatient clinics in one convenient setting, Specialized Care Center housing a 13-county regional trauma center, Comprehensive Cancer Program, Emergency and Express Care Services and the 149-bed, award-winning Children's Hospital of Georgia with one of five Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the state. Other components of Wellstar MCG Health include a variety of dedicated centers such as Sports Medicine, Senior Health, Joint Replacement, Comprehensive Diabetes Care and Neuroscience.

AU Health is accredited by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, the national body that establishes and enforces standards of quality for health care institutions. It is a member of the Council of Teaching Hospitals of the American Association of Medical Colleges, the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions and the University Hospitals Consortium, a nationwide association of hospitals serving medical universities.

Admissions totaled 15,737 during the fiscal year 2000 with outpatient visits reaching 473,033. There are 411 active members of the AU Health and Clinics medical staff and 235 active members of the Children's Hospital of Georgia medical staff, supported by 385 house staff members.

Piedmont Augusta Hospital has served the medical needs of the Augusta community since 1818. From 1828 until 1956 it was the primary teaching hospital for the Medical College and subsequent to 1956, with the opening of the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Hospital, University Hospital and its medical staff has maintained a teaching affiliation with the Medical College for both undergraduate and postgraduate medical programs. Now, almost two hundred years old, Piedmont Augusta has emerged as a multifaceted community not-for-profit health care system, offering a comprehensive and integrated range of health care services to those throughout the Augusta-area and beyond.

The Piedmont Augusta Health Care System is governed by a volunteer board of trustees from the Augusta community and is anchored by the 612-bed Piedmonth Augusta, the second largest hospital in Georgia. Its Medical Staff numbers more than 600 physicians representing every medical and surgical specialty and provides comprehensive acute care services. More than 21,000 patients are admitted, 3,000 babies delivered, and 100,000 patients treated in the Emergency Department annually. Other services include Women's Health, Behavioral Health, Laboratory Outreach, Nutrition, Rehabilitation, and Rape Crisis & Sexual Assault Services. Piedmont Augusta also has service agreements with nine affiliate hospitals located throughout the Central Savannah River Area.

Community-based programs include Health Central, a community wellness/fitness center, located in downtown Augusta providing certified instructors, classes, and the latest exercise facilities; the Center for Community Health which provides primary care, health screenings, and educational programs for medically under- served residents; Home Health Care; a Resource Center for Aging; the Brandon Wilde Lifecare Community for retirement living options, including assisted-living and skilled nursing care; the Walton Rehabilitation Hospital; and Kentwood and Westwood, skilled nursing facilities. Year-round educational opportunities for the community include the ACE program for third grade students in 20 Richmond County schools with lessons on character, smoking prevention, and health.

The Medical College affiliation with Piedmont Augusta enhances the training of undergraduate and postgraduate students by incorporating into their experiences real life community services provided by privately practicing community physicians. It demonstrates those services which they will be expected to provide upon completion of their training. The affiliation also demonstrates to students and residents how vital community services evolve in a changing healthcare environment in order to improve the health of citizens of our community.

The Augusta VA Medical Center (VAMC) proudly offers quality health care to our nation's veterans. The Augusta VAMC primary service area includes 17 counties in Georgia and seven counties in South Carolina; but as a member of the Atlanta Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN7), veterans who live as far away as Alabama may be cared for in the Augusta VAMC. Nine VA medical centers in the Southeast comprise the Atlanta Veterans Integrated Network (VISN7): Georgia -- Atlanta, Augusta, Dublin; South Carolina -- Charleston and Columbia; Alabama -- Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System in Montgomery and Tuskegee.

The Augusta VAMC is a two-division medical center which provides tertiary care in medicine, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, and spinal cord injury. The Downtown Division adjacent to the Augusta University has 155 beds (52 medicine, 37 surgery, six neurology, and 60 spinal cord injury). The Uptown Division, approximately three miles from Augusta University on Wrightsboro Road, has 165 beds (68 psychiatry, 72 intermediate medicine, 15 blind rehabilitation, and 10 rehabilitation medicine). In addition, a 60-bed Nursing Home Care Unit and a 60-bed Domiciliary are located at the Uptown Division. The Augusta VAMC serves as a network resource for the treatment of spinal cord injury, post traumatic stress disorder, and psychiatry patients.

The Augusta VAMC prides itself on continually improving and expanding its health care knowledge. The VAMC fully supports, as part of its mission, graduate medical education. The use of the Augusta VAMC as a training site for Wellstar MCG Health residents has a long history, and the affiliation between the Augusta VAMC and Augusta University may be one of the older ones in the entire VA system. The Augusta VAMC's participation in this affiliation not only helps fulfill an education mission but also contributes to a high level of care provided to veteran patients. Medical residents are involved in nearly every aspect and phase of the care of medical and dental patients offered at the Augusta VAMC.
