We became a fully integrated program in 2018. We have a total of 48 residents (12
per class). The PGY1 residents complete a variety of rotations, including general
surgery, medicine, cardiology, emergency medicine, surgical ICU and pain medicine.
|
Our residents mainly rotate in four locations, with the majority of their time spent
at Wellstar MCG Medical Center. They also rotate at the Children's Hospital of Georgia. |
We do not allow moonlighting for our residents, they are paid extra for overtime from
the PGY3 year onward. |
Yes. Residents in good standing (based in part on structured tests and anesthesia
competence evaluations) can apply to the online MBA program at Augusta University if they have been approved by the Clinical Competency Committee.
The application process includes obtaining transcripts, requesting letters of recommendation,
and paying an application fee. Once accepted into the program, residents would need
to apply to the Tuition Assistance Program. The application fee, textbook purchases, and any additional fees are reimbursable
through book and travel funds. Residents would be eligible to begin the MBA program
six months into their CA1 year. Dr. Efrain Riveros-Perez will oversee this educational
initiative and ensure that trainees continue to progress satisfactorily in our anesthesia
residency program. Any resident who is not performing as expected may be asked to
discontinue pursuit of an MBA degree. |
Roughly half of the residents go into private practice while the other half pursue
fellowships in critical care, cardiothoracic anesthesia, and chronic pain. Our residents
typically have the pick of programs when it comes to fellowships and have been able
to secure either academic or private positions afterward. Some residents have also
stayed on as faculty. |
The anesthesia department provides training verifications upon request. Verifications
for internships, residencies, and fellowships are subject to the following fees, payable

Life in Augusta is great. We get all four seasons, but our winter is fairly limited. Summers are
warm. The cost of living is quite low, whereas the standard of living is fairly high.
Many residents buy houses and rent them during Master's week to help recover some
of the mortgage costs. There are safe suburbs with great schools as well. Atlanta
and Savannah are only two hours away in either direction. |
