Frequently Asked Questions

I only see a slot for categorical spots on ERAS. Are you a fully integrated program?

We became a fully integrated program in 2018. We have a total of 48 residents (12 per class). The PGY1 residents complete a variety of rotations including general surgery, medicine, cardiology, emergency medicine, surgical ICU and pain medicine.

Where do residents mainly rotate?

Our residents mainly rotate in four locations, with the majority of their time spent at  Augusta University Medical Center. They also rotate at the Children's Hospital of Georgia.

Are there any moonlighting opportunities? Do the residents get paid for overtime?

We do not allow moonlighting for our residents, however they are paid extra for overtime from the PGY3 year onward.

Can I pursue an MBA during residency training?

Yes. Residents in good standing (based in part on structured tests and anesthesia competence evaluations) can apply to the online MBA program at Augusta University if they have been approved by the Clinical Competency Committee. The application process includes obtaining transcripts, requesting letters of recommendation, and paying an application fee. Once accepted into the program, residents would need to apply to the Tuition Assistance Program. The application fee, textbook purchases, and any additional fees are reimbursable through book and travel funds. Residents would be eligible to begin the MBA program six months into their CA1 year. Dr. Efrain Riveros-Perez will oversee this educational initiative and ensure that trainees continue to progress satisfactorily in our anesthesia residency program. Any resident who is not performing as expected may be asked to discontinue pursuit of an MBA degree.

Where do most of the residents end up after graduation?

Roughly half of the residents goes into private practice while the other half pursues fellowships in critical care, cardiothoracic anesthesia and chronic pain. Our residents typically have the pick of programs when it comes to fellowships and have been able to secure either academic or private positions afterward. Some residents have also stayed on as faculty.

How do I obtain a residency training verification?

The anesthesia department provides training verifications upon request. Verifications for internships, residencies, and fellowships are subject to the following fees, payable by bank transfer (ACH) or check. The fees cover the costs associated with the retrieval and processing of verifications and references.

Fee Schedule*

  • $0 – Verifications for residents who are 0-2 years post program completion.
  • $50.00 – Verification of training dates and/or program completion. This is to be used for credentialing purposes only and is issued in response to a request by a hospital or other agency. For graduates 2+ years post completion.
  • $75.00 – Verifications of training dates and program specifics on training including procedures, commentary on performance, etc., on a form provided by an institution or agency. For graduates 2-10 years post completion.
  • $100.00 – Verifications of training dates and program specifics on training including procedures, commentary on performance, etc., on a form provided by an institution or agency. For graduates 10+ years post completion.
  • $35.00 – Additional fee for case logs (2004-present available).
  • $5.00 – Please add an additional $5 for any verification requiring notarization.

If you will be paying by ACH, please email your request with a signed Residency or Fellowship Training Verification Request to mcganes@augusta.edu. If you are paying by check, please mail it with the form to: Residency Verification, Dept of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Augusta University, 1120 15th Street #BI-2144, Augusta GA 30912.

Once payment is received, the verification will be completed and returned within five business days.

* Verifications will not be completed without a valid authorization for release of information.

Any graduate wishing to obtain a copy of his or her complete training record will need to remit $100.00 to the address above.

How is life in Augusta?

Life in Augusta is great. We get all four seasons, however our winter is fairly limited. Summers are warm. Cost of living is quite low whereas the standard of living is fairly high. Many residents buy houses and rent them during Master's week to help recover some of the mortgage costs. There are safe suburbs with great schools as well. Atlanta and Savannah are only two hours away in either direction.
