Contact Information

Dr. Tingen is a behavioral nurse scientist targeting primary and secondary prevention of tobacco use in children and parents through culturally tailored interventions.  She also addresses multiple risk factor reduction to include passive smoke exposure asthma, obesity, and alcohol largely focusing on health disparities through a community-based participatory (CBPR) approach.  Overall goals include prevention premature death and disabilities of cancer and cardiovascular disease through promoting health behavior choices in families.

Research Interests

  • Preventing Tobacco use and passive smoke exposure in children and families
  • Developing skills for healthy behavior choices in parents and children related to preventing obesity
  • Examining mechanistic pathways of passive smoke exposure and obesity and passive smoke exposure and asthma.
  • Developing tailored interventions for smoking cessation and healthy lifestyle choices in minority and disparate populations including rural communities.
  • Conducting community-based participatory research (CBPR) in school and community settings and testing treatment effects through randomized control trials (RCT).
