Bio

Dr. Max Bursey earned his medical degree at the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, VA and subsequently completed an Emergency Medicine residency at Augusta University. After residency training, he served as an Active Duty Army emergency physician at Fort Benning, GA. While at Fort Benning, he held several positions, including Medical Director for the Martin Army Community Hospital Emergency Department, and Medical Director for Fort Benning Fire, EMS, and Air MEDEVAC assets.

During his time at Fort Benning, Dr. Bursey was also instrumental in developing comprehensive clinical and operational protocols on the prevention and management of environmental and exercise associated heat injuries such as exertional heat stroke. Dr. Bursey received multiple awards and recognitions for his extensive work in the field of heat related injuries.

Upon completion of his Active Duty service, Dr. Bursey returned to Augusta University to become the institutions first Emergency Medicine/Anesthesia Critical Care fellow. While training in critical care, he simultaneously completed a separate fellowship in clinical ultrasound. Upon graduating, he accepted a position as an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, and is serving as the Clinical Service Chief for Emergency Medicine Critical Care. He also maintains a joint appointment with the Department of Surgery and serves as an intensivist in the Shock-Trauma ICU.
