PATH-5005: Transfusion Medicine

Location : Au Health Systems, Blood Bank Laboratory

Enrollment : 1 Maximum

Prerequisites : Phase II

Duration : 1 month

Months Offered : February through October

Goals : Understanding general principles of transfusion therapy and therapeutic aphaeresis. Blood
donation and hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) therapy/collection principles.

Objectives : Acquire specific clinical knowledge related to: compatibility testing; blood component therapy; therapeutic aphaeresis procedures; autologous and allogeneic blood donations; observe therapeutic phlebotomy procedures; hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) therapy and collection procedures; transfusion medicine clinical consultation process.

Activities : Rotate through blood bank service areas; observe therapeutic aphaeresis procedures; observe HPC collection; HPC unit processing; blood donor room observation; participate in clinical consultations.

Lab Hours : 40

Assessment : Verbal evaluation with preceptor at end of rotation.
