VICEROY graphic

The VICEROY program is intended to increase the quantity and quality of students who possess job-ready DoD cybersecurity skills upon graduation.

The approach is to augment traditional college curricula by providing hands-on, experiential learning opportunities that are uniquely tailored to match the workforce demands of the Armed Services, Department of Defense, and our Defense Industrial Base partners.

Section 1640 of the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 authorized the Secretary of Defense to carry out a “Program to Establish Cyber Institutes at Institutions of Higher Learning for purposes of accelerating and focusing the development of foundational expertise in critical cyber operational skills for future military and civilian leaders.”

The Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Research and Engineering, in collaboration with the Air Force Research Laboratory, developed the Virtual Institutes for Cyber and Electromagnetic Spectrum Research and Employ (VICEROY) program for consortia of institutions of higher learning to provide high-impact, experiential learning opportunities capable of imbuing students with the needed skills.

Augusta University is part of a Virtual Institute (VI) led by Mississippi State University and also includes Clark Atlanta University.
