Program Mission

The goal of this program is to reduce health disparities and inequities in skin cancer screening for people living in rural, underserved, or underpopulated regions of the State of Georgia through the following approaches:

  • Training the next generation of primary care medical providers (e.g., Family Medicine residents and medical students) in remote diagnosis (telemedicine/teledermatology) of skin lesions by partnering them with expert physicians in our Department of Dermatology.
  • Providing remote diagnosis (telemedicine/teledermatology) of skin lesions by partnering primary care providers at clinics in rural Georgia with expert physicians within our Department of Dermatology.
  • Providing dermatologic and cancer prevention education to healthcare providers and the lay public using distance learning technology.

These approaches of access to expert dermatologic assessment of suspicious skin lesions and patient and primary healthcare provider education will improve the health of Georgians living in rural and urban underserved areas, thus helping to fulfill the mission of the Georgia Cancer Center.

Technology

Tech1 DermKit on skin, cropped

A battery-powered dermatoscope is attached to an iPhone, & together they can capture images with a high degree of magnification & cross-polarized light.

The system utilizes HIPAA-compliant software to transmit images to a remote smartphone, tablet, laptop, or computer.

Process of Dermloop exam

1. Patient needs help regarding complex skin condition.

2. PCP sends eConsult with pictures of the skin condition and patient's medical history through Dermloop.

3. Dermatologist returns likely diagnosis, suggested treatment plan, and educational feedback to PCP.

4. PCP informs a patient about the results.

5. PCP can copy/paste the results or transfer them directly to EHR system.

Dermloop screens

Dermloop Interface:

Left: Location of skin lesion(s) is marked on clinical image.

Center: High-quality dermoscopic images are uploaded for quick and easy transmission to dermatology experts for diagnosis.

Right: Navigation screen for seamlessly uploading all data into the patient’s electronic health record, allowing for easy follow-up.
