The Clinical Laboratory Science Program faculty have the responsibility to educate the future clinical laboratory science professionals. The faculty are responsible for the planning and selection of course content and for the coordination of all professional classroom teaching and applied education.
The student educational experiences include didactic, laboratory, and clinical experiences. Affiliation agreements are arranged with accredited laboratories and the clinical faculty at the affiliated sites are the educational coordinators for the students. Currently there are 29 clinical affiliates in Georgia and throughout the nation.
Clinical/Medical Laboratory Scientists are employed in general hospital laboratories, physicians' offices, private laboratories, mission fields, armed forces, Peace Corps, Project HOPE, public health, medical research programs, pharmaceutical laboratories, blood banks and industry.
Beginning salaries for recent graduates with baccalaureate degrees in clinical laboratory sciences average $61,860 in the clinical setting.
The Clinical Laboratory Science educational philosophy is based on the creation of a stimulating scientific and professional learning environment. The courses are objective driven and cognitive, psychomotor, and affective domains are incorporated into the courses. Faculty utilize text books, lecture notes, images, cases studies, study questions, professional experiences, problem-based learning experiences, laboratory experiences, and clinical experiences to ensure that the students graduating from the clinical laboratory science program are competent first-time practitioners. The faculty stay up to date on current theories and concepts through professional practice and by involvement in clinical laboratory science research. The faculty provide many hours of continuing education at local, state, regional, and national meetings. The clinical laboratory science professional courses meet and exceed the accreditation standards for the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science.
Our programs are accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. The bachelor's and master's programs are offered on-campus at our Augusta, GA campus and at our mobile laboratory in Lawrenceville, GA.
The MHS-CLS graduate program requires 74 graduate semester credit hours for graduation. The student must have a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, microbiology, or a related science field. The curriculum is five semesters long and culminates in a research or capstone project. This program also offers courses in evidenced-based practice, clinical services delivery, epidemiology, and education principles. An MHS-CLS degree prepares the student for practice in research, management, and education as well as practice as a clinical laboratory scientist.
This is an entry-level degree. Upon graduation, students are eligible to sit for the national MLS certification examination offered by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC).
All application material must be submitted to Admissions no later than June 1 to be considered for our web-based program. For main campus applicants, a complete application must be on file in Admissions by June 1 (a complete application consists of your application, all transcripts, three references, an official transcript evaluation completed by AU admissions, and a GRE score).
