DOD SkillBridge Program

Augusta University offers individual internships through the Department of Defense's SkillBridge Program on our AU campuses and the Georgia Cyber Innovation and Training Center. We assist our nation's Military personnel in transitioning from active duty to civilian life.

Skillbridge Internship programs are designed to provide valuable career skills and enhance professional development for individuals making the transition from military to civilian careers. Participants gain practical experience and insights to support their successful integration into the workforce.

Our goal is to provide both general and specialized skills required to succeed after separation. As one of Augusta's largest employers, we offer a variety of internship opportunities through numerous departments, matching the goals of the service member with the opportunities at the university.

"The Skillbridge internship was the most worthwhile aspect of my military - civilian transition. The collaboration, teamwork, and organizational culture of the Cybersecurity professionals in the Security Operations Center (SOC) at Augusta University was pivotal in my decision to pursue roles in this industry following my transition. There is no substitute for this experience"

"The Augusta University Career Skills Program (Skillbridge) internship with Cyber Defense provided invaluable cybersecurity knowledge and skills which led to my selection as the Director of Cybersecurity Solutions for Augusta University. The Cyber Defense team provided an exceptional experience with collaboration, teamwork and a positive organizational culture which made it easy to call Augusta University my new home. The Augusta University Skillbridge offerings warrant a strong consideration by any potential Career Skills Program (Skillbridge) member looking for an internship!"

I am humbled for the Skillbridge opportunity at Augusta University. I was immediately embraced and onboarded as if I was already a member of the team. The warm atmosphere and family dynamic was well received. This opportunity greatly prepared me for my military transition and was well above what I expected! I am honored and excited to be back as a full- time employee. The dynamic has not changed and I am very appreciative of the opportunity to be back!

Frequently Asked Questions

No filter applied.

As one of Augusta’s largest employers, we offer a variety of opportunities, be it in Cyber Defense, Human Resources, Facilities Management, Academia or in Health Sciences. We work with the service members to find a position that matches their experience and future goal.

Once our office receives your information, we share it with our leadership to find an opportunity. Once identified, the department will conduct an interview and if all parties agree, will send an offer and the CSP agreement. The service member will complete the agreement and return to Karyn Nixon. Karyn will submit it through AU Legal for the AU Provost approval. Once approved, the agreement is returned to the service member for the Department of Defense approvals. Once AU receives a fully executed agreement, AU will order a background check.
The paperwork can take time, we suggest reaching out to us as soon as you decide to separate.
The length of a Skillbridge internship is determined by the Department of Defense based on the service member’s rank. We work 40-hour weeks, Monday through Friday, following the AU holiday calendar.
