World Languages majors are skilled linguists, creative collaborators, and culturally-sensitive critical thinkers.
The World Languages degree program is flexible so that students design their path based on their interests. We offer major concentrations in Spanish, Spanish with P-12 Teacher Certification, French, and French with P-12 Teacher Certification
Bilingualism and multilingualism are prized skills in the global marketplace, and the processes of learning and acquiring a language facilitate neural development and mental flexibility. Our advanced courses range from the scientific study of language to the integrative study of literature, helping our students to be better prepared for graduate/advanced studies and the job market.
Students in the World Languages Program learn to:
"One of the best things about EWL is the supportive learning environment and the sense of community. Whenever I approach my professors or peers with questions, I feel a positive energy that encourages me. It's comforting to know that everyone can get the help they need. While we may not be the largest department, each and every EWL member shows incredible teamwork, optimism, and a real willingness to learn!" - Liam Bynoe, Spanish
Our students develop their skills through personalized coursework, undergraduate research, study abroad opportunities, community engagement projects, portfolios, internships, and more!

Expand your worldview: Studying other languages gives you insight into world cultures, including literature, art, music, and more.
Build bridges and communicate effectively: Being multilingual allows you to communicate effectively across cultures, disciplines, and industries. Multilingual people have the skillset to collaborate with others and work together toward shared goals.
Gain a competitive edge in your career: In today’s global economy, employers highly value multilingualism and cultural awareness in their employees. In the US, 90% of employers prioritize multilingualism when hiring, and multilingual employees earn higher salaries than monolingual employees.
Grow your brain—literally! Learning a new language stimulates your brain, growing gray matter and minimizing cognitive decline and the effects of aging. You will improve your memory and attention span while boosting creativity.
Extend your reach and make a global impact: The more languages you know, the more places you can go! Spanish and French are the 4th and 5th most spoken languages in the world, respectively. Our department also offers German, Arabic, and Chinese.
The Spanish and French concentrations prepare students to analyze complex information, to write for a variety of audiences, and to conduct and present research. Our students regularly go on to graduate programs, med school, dental school, and law school. They also regularly go on to have successful careers in education, business, translation, interpretation, and broadcasting.
