English Major

English majors become clear and effective communicators, avid critical thinkers, and bold creatives.

The English degree program is flexible so that students can design their path based on their interests. We offer major concentrations in Literature, Literature with Secondary Education Certification, Creative Writing, or Professional Writing and Rhetoric.

English majors learn:

  • to analyze aural, visual, and written texts
  • to write in a variety of modes and for different audiences, while keeping in mind the user's experience
  • to conduct independent and collaborative research
  • to understand domestic and global cultures through text-based study

Our students develop their skills through personalized coursework, undergraduate research, study abroad opportunities, community projects, portfolios, internships, and more!

"The best thing about EWL for me is the wonderful faculty that I have come to know and work with during my time at AU. They are all so knowledgeable, and I truly feel that my class time and out-of-class assignments are enriching my life and my skills as a writer" - Ollie Stocker, Creative Writing
