Neuropathology

Will meet in the neuropathology microscope room. Cases will be reviewed by the attending neuropathologist. When there is a neurosurgery resident on the neuropathology service, the neurosurgery resident will lead the review of cases under the guidance of the neuropathologist.

Department Meeting

Previously known as the "faculty meeting". 1st Friday will meet in the 3rd floor amphitheater and will be faculty and residents. 2nd Friday will meet in the 3rd floor amphitheater and will be faculty and support staff (office, PA's, etc.). 3rd and 4th Friday will be in the department offices and will be faculty only.

Journal Club

Will meet in the 3rd floor amphitheater. Articles for discussion will be assigned. Individual residents will be responsible for presenting and leading discussion of their assigned articles.

Grand Rounds

Lectures will be given by residents, attendings, 4th year medical students rotating on service, other AU faculty, and outside speakers. Each neurosurgery resident and each neurosurgery faculty will be responsible for one lecture per year.

Neurosurgery Conference

Will meet in the 3rd floor amphitheater. The format will be case presentations by a neurosurgery resident followed by review of the pertinent studies (presented by resident, but with input from neuroradiologist). Cases will be from AU, VA, and CMC. Cases will be chosen by involved residents to stimulate discussion and debate. They can either be pre-op or post-op (or no-op). Starting in September, the conference will include all the community neurosurgeons. There will be 2 conferences at AU and 1 conference at University. Again, a 4th conference will be for M&M.

Morbidity and Mortality Conference

Will meet in the 3rd floor amphitheater. The conference will be the 2nd Friday of the month. Cases presented will be from the previous month.

Conference Attending Policy

  1. Residents: Residents are required to attend all scheduled conferences. A resident is excused from conference attendance if off-campus, or is dealing with an emergency medical situation. Residents are not excused from conference to assist in surgery or see clinic patients. Any of these activities on a Friday are the responsibility of the attending surgeon. It is my hope that attendings will not schedule clinical activities that are of educational value to the residents during the conference schedule.
  2. Faculty: Faculty are required to attend 36 hours of conference per quarter (average 12 hours per month, 3 hours per conference day). Since the new conference schedule starts in August, all faculty will receive 12 hours credit for July to calculate for the 1st quarter conference attendance. In addition, faculty will receive 4 hours credit for canceled conference days (right now, the Friday after Thanksgiving and the Friday of Master week). Eligible conferences for the attendance requirement are Chief Rounds, Neuropathology Conference, Journal Club, Grand Rounds, Neurosurgery Conference, and M&M Conference. Attendance statistics will be maintained by the Residency Program Coordinator. These statistics will be publicly reviewed in the Department Meeting.
  3. M&M Conference: This is a mandatory attendance conference for all residents and all faculty. The only exceptions are if an individual is off-campus or if an individual is taking care of a true patient emergency.
