Honors Policy

Augusta University awards honors distinction to graduating undergraduate students who meet specific standards of academic excellence as measured by the grade point average (GPA). A distinction of high academic achievement is placed on the student's diploma and is noted on their permanent record. Please review the Policy Library for more information.

What to Know About Honors Designation

Please review the following information to better understand how honors are awarded.

Latin Honors Distinction

Honors are awarded to students with GPAs that fall within the following three categories:

  • Suma Cum Laude: 3.90 - 4.0
  • Magna Cum Laude: 3.70 - 3.89
  • Cum Laude: 3.50 - 3.69

Requirements

Please review the honors requirements below to determine which category you fall into.

For Students Completing All Coursework at Augusta University

  • A minimum of 60 semester hours in residence at AU for a bachelor’s degree.
  • Regents GPA is used for the calculation of honors.

For Students Transferring Coursework to Augusta University

  • A minimum of 60 semester hours in residence at AU for a bachelor’s degree.
  • GPA including all transfer work and all work taken at AU will be used for calculation of honors.  Both this calculated GPA and the Regents GPA must meet the standards below. The honor will be determined by the lower of the two GPAs.

What is the residency requirement to qualify for honors at Augusta University?

For an undergraduate degree to be awarded with honors, a student must have completed a minimum of 60 semester hours in residence for a bachelor’s degree or a minimum of 30 semester hours in residence for an associate’s degree.

What GPA is used to determine my honors classification?

For students completing all course work at Augusta University, the Regents GPA is used for the calculation of honors.

For students transferring coursework to Augusta University, a grade point average including all transfer work and all work taken at Augusta University will be used for calculation of honors. Both this calculated GPA and the Regents GPA must meet the published standards. The honor will be determined by the lower of the two GPAs.

Will my final GPA be rounded to meet the requirements for honors?

Grade point averages are not rounded.

What GPA is used to list my honors in the commencement program?

Final GPA from the semester prior to commencement is used to list honors classification in the commencement program.

Example: Fall 2015 GPA will be used to list honors classification in the commencement program for Spring 2016.

What if the honor I qualify for changes after my GPA is updated for the final term?

Your Augusta University transcript, as well as your diploma will list the honor based on the GPA after your last term.

When can I pick up my honor cords?

Honors cords will be available for pick up in the Registrar’s Office during the posted dates on the Registrar and Graduation calendar.

What student classification receives honors?

Only undergraduate students receive honors.

Where can I find my honors classification after graduation?

Honors classification will be listed on your official transcript and diploma.
