Department of Surgery: Trauma/Critical Care
Dr. Erika Simmerman Mabes is returning as a faculty member of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University as Associate Professor of Surgery within the Division of Trauma / Surgical Critical Care / Acute Care Surgery.
She completed undergraduate studies at North Carolina State University with majors in Art & Design and Chemistry with early aspirations to become a surgeon.
Dr. Mabes completed medical school at Nova Southeastern University College of Osteopathic Medicine including a one year predoctoral OMT fellowship. She then completed her general surgery residency at the Medical College of Georgia. She returned to Augusta with her husband and three sons to pursue a surgical critical care fellowship at the Medical College of Georgia.
She has been a leader in our program for research, publications, and national presentations during her time as a trainee and is excited to continue her scholarly development as a faculty member!
Dr. Mabes also brings to the department a passion for and experience in resident education and is awarded the title of Clinical Director of Surgery Resident Simulation Education, already developing a new surgical resident simulation curriculum as well as a multidisciplinary simulation curriculum.
Aligning with Dr. Mabes' love of teaching and passion for resident education, she has joined the leadership in our program as an Associate Program Director for the Department of General Surgery Residency.
