Trauma Critical Care

GHS Medical Center Trauma sign

Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University is home to the regions only American College of Surgeons Verified Level 1 adult and Level 2 Pediatric trauma centers.

Excellence and pioneering innovation are hallmarks of the trauma program which was instrumental in the medical center's 1982 designation as the first Level 1 trauma center in the state.

Specialists in the care of critically ill and injured patients, our surgeons are board-certified in surgery with added qualifications in surgical critical care. As the core of the trauma/critical care team, they work closely with experts in emergency medicine, radiology, neurosurgery, orthopedics and a host of other subspecialties to provide the highest level of care to over 2,000 patients each year.

Crucial to this multidisciplinary model of care is our Specialized Care Center, a 12-bed trauma intensive care unit staffed with the state's most highly trained nursing and allied health professionals. The center provides 24/7, 365-day, in-house coverage by a dedicated team of physicians and advanced practice nurses using state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment. We are one of the few trauma centers equipped to treat patients of all ages: specialty-trained surgeons within the medical center treat patients ages 13 and older, while specialty-trained pediatric surgeons treat ages 12 and younger at Augusta University Childrens Hospital of Georgia.

Focused on improving patient care through research, the Trauma/Surgical Critical Care Section formed the Trauma Interdisciplinary Group for Research, or TIGR, to consolidate multidisciplinary research efforts in trauma and critical care. The National Institutes of Health and local sources support this research in an effort to reduce the burden of illness and injury.

Dedicated to the continuing education of future health care professionals, the section has trained thousands of critical care specialists and intensivists since 1982, providing opportunities at various levels to meet individual needs.
