Child Neurology Residency

Our Program

The Child Neurology Residency Program at MCG is highly competitive and highly rewarding. Our department accepts one candidate every other year. Our child neurology division has experience providing care in all aspects of child neurology, with a specific emphasis on epilepsy. Many of the faculty are strongly involved in research and resident involvement is encouraged.

How to Apply

Child neurology participates in the Match Program with ERAS. Applicants are encouraged to contact the program director as soon as possible.

We are a diversified department and accept applications from those with MD or DO training as well as ECFMGs.

  • ERAS Application.

  • USMLE Step 1 (a passing score on the first attempt is required) or COMLEX Step 1
  • +/- USMLE Step 2 or COMLEX Step 2 (We realize that there may have been some delays secondary to the COVID19 Pandemic)
  • MSPE (medical school performance evaluation)
  • Medical School Transcript
  • Personal Statement
  • Photograph
  • At least three letters of recommendation, with at least one being from a neurologist (if possible).

Residency Curriculum

Our child neurology residency program is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and requires students to take:

  • One year of adult neurology
  • One year of child neurology
  • One year of neuropathology, child psychiatry, EEG, EMG, neuroradiology, and neuroscience electives.
  • Two years of training in general pediatrics, but other routes are possible and should be discussed with the program director.

 

The PGY-3 year is primarily adult neurology; during which the resident learns the fundamentals of the clinical neurological examination and diagnosis, and begins to learn the management of neurological disease.

Clinical rotations include:

  • Inpatient neurology (stroke and general), 
  • Neurointensive care,
  • Outpatient neurology clinics (both general neurology and subspecialty clinics in sleep, epilepsy, and movement disorders)  

PGY-4/PGY-5 years of the residency are primarily dedicated to child neurology. Core rotations include inpatient consult service, inpatient epilepsy monitoring service, ICU service, and outpatient clinics.

Clinical neuroscience electives are available in:

  • Child psychiatry
  • Neuro-oncology
  • Genetics
  • Electroencephalography
  • Epilepsy
  • Movement disorders
  • Electromyography
  • Neuro-ophthalmology
  • Sleep

Our program offers an academically rich environment with multiple didactic conferences available for our residents to attend including:

  • Adult neurology morning report
  • Neuroradiology
  • Neurology Boot camp
  • Weekly scheduled lecture series
  • Pediatric grand rounds
  • Stroke Conference
  • Epilepsy Conference
  • and others
