Discover the diverse ecology and evolutionary patterns of Kenya. Excursions include safaris at Hell’s Gate National Park and Maasai Mara, visits to amazing Kariandusi Archeological Site where Australopithecus once roamed, and ancient rituals with the Maasai Tribe.

Students will study the ecological processes with emphasis on species diversity, community relationships, and conservation of the Kenyan tropical savanna. Additionally, students will learn about fossil records and molecular genetics and the significance of Kenya and Kariandusi Prehistoric Site in the history of human evolution.

Pre-requisites:

  • BIOL 4950 Ecology - BIOL 1108
  • BIOL 4950 Fossils - BIOL 1101 & 2112 or BIOL 1108

Day One

Arrive in Kenya.

Day Two

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Kiswahili lesson, Limuru marketplace challenge, Brackenhurst Botanic Gardens and Indigenous Forest walk with lecture on principles of ecological restoration. Welcome dinner at Fig & Olive.

Day Three

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Nairobi National Museum visit. Cooking lesson and dinner with local families.

Day Four

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Kereita Indigenous Forest walk. Travel to Naivasha, boat ride on Lake Naivasha. Elsamere Museum visit and Born Free film screening.

Day Five

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Kariandusi Museum and archeological site visit. Soysambu Conservancy conservation talk and engagement.

June

Day Six

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Visit Hell’s Gate National Park.  Elsamere Centre for Education in Sustainability engagement.

Day Seven

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Travel to Maasai Mara. Talk on Naboisho Conservancy and Mara conservancies model. Predator monitoring game drive.

Day Eight

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Early morning wildlife monitoring and data collection. Walk with Maasai herders and manyatta visit.

Day Nine

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner included. Early morning wildlife monitoring and data collection. Maa Trust visit.
