The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) recommends that all U.S. medical schools obtain a national background check on applicants upon their initial conditional acceptance to medical school. This is to bolster the public’s continuing trust in the medical profession, enhance the safety and well being of patients, ascertain the ability of accepted applicants and enrolled medical students to eventually become licensed as physicians. It is also to minimize the liability of medical schools and their affiliated clinical facilities.
