From the iconic landscapes of Table Mountain and the stunning Garden Route to the vast expanses of the Kruger National Park, South Africa is a paradise. Students will be immersed in the vibrant cultures of Cape Town, where rich histories blend seamlessly with modern vibrancy. With its warm hospitality and breathtaking scenery, South Africa promises an unforgettable journey that will make students eager to return!

The South Africa program is open to either the EdD or EdS in Advanced Educational Studies program. Students will study the significance of place and how it shapes curriculum. Visiting a variety of educational settings and many sites of historical and cultural importance, including Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned, students will come away with new knowledge about how characteristics of a locale become part of the curriculum of the place and how this influences life there.

Day One

Fly from Atlanta to Cape Town.

July

Day Two

Arrival in Cape Town and transfer to hotel. Welcome dinner and orientation.

July

Day Three

Cape Town city walk, exploring historical landmarks such as the Slave Lodge. Visit Company Gardens, Castle of Good Hope, and the District Six Museum. Enjoy a scenic ride on the Table Mountain Cable Car and then visit Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens. Breakfast provided, lunch and dinner on your own.

Day Four

Take part in a Langa Township Experience, learning about local culture and community. Visit the University of Western Cape. Breakfast and lunch provided.

Day Five

Full day workshop at Philippi Village Community Development Hub, focusing on Education and Business in Township Spaces. Visit Cape University of Technology. Breakfast and lunch provided.

Day Six

Explore historic Robben Island including the Robben Island prison where former President Neslon Mandela was kept during the colonial and Apartheid years of South Africa. Visit Two Oceans Aquarium and enjoy free time at the V&A Waterfront with opportunities to dine and shop. Breakfast and dinner provided.

Day Seven

Visit Ubuntu Football Academy and engage in a school experience and participate in a soccer match. Breakfast and lunch provided.

Day Eight

Visit Babylonstoren Farm to discover agriculture practices. Participate in a cooking class consisting of Cape Malay cuisine. Wrap up day with a Service Learning Orientation. Breakfast and dinner provided.

Day Nine

Half-day Service Learning session with Amy Foundation. Enjoy Gatsby’s Lunch at Wembley Roadhouse, a local favorite. Breakfast and lunch provided.

July

Day Ten

Visit the Boulders Penguin Colony and enjoy a scenic drive along Chapman’s Peak Drive. Lunch at Kalkies, a local eatery known for its fresh seafood and relaxing atmosphere. Breakfast and lunch provided.

July

Day Eleven

Discover the historic St. George’s Cathedral and explore the Greenmarket Square. Later, students will be immersed in the rhythms of Djembe drumming, followed by an authentic African dinner. Breakfast and dinner provided.

July

Day Twelve
