Duo

Augusta University uses Duo two-factor authentication for added security.

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) is the simplest, most effective way to ensure users really are who they say they are. MFA is required when accessing AU systems, applications, and devices.

MFA requires more than one method to authenticate into a system successfully.  The most common methods are something you know (i.e., a password) and something you have (e.g., a mobile phone, tablet, or token authenticator), applying a second layer of security to your account.

Passwords are essential for security and privacy, but a second layer of protection is needed because passwords can be stolen, guessed, or hacked. With Duo, a successfully compromised password cannot access an account or system. The second-factor authentication provides staff, faculty, and students a second barrier to prevent account compromise.

International Access

A DUO International Access Request is separate from the International Travel Risk Consultation required by the AU International Travel Policy. If you will be traveling with Augusta University-owned equipment or accessing AU systems or data while in another country, please complete the travel security consultation as described in the International Travel Policy.

If you plan to travel outside the United States and need to access AU IT resources while abroad, you MUST submit both the DUO International Access Request and the International Travel Registry Form before your trip. Access from outside the U.S. is only permitted with prior approval.

Note: Some countries and regions are subject to economic and trade sanctions enforced by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control.

An International Access request will not allow access to the following countries/regions:

  • Cuba (CU)
  • North Korea (KP)
  • Iran (IR)
  • Sudan (SD)
  • Syria (SY)
  • Crimea Region (43)
  • Donetsk Region (14)
  • Luhansk Region (09)
  • Sevastapol Region (40)

How to register my device on Duo

Duo's self-enrollment process makes registering your phone or tablet and installing the application on your device easy.

First time users

  1. Ensure you have received your NetID (Jag ID), activated your account, [link to accounts and authentication], and created your password.
  2. Visit our Duo dashboard. Log in using your NetID and password.
  3. Enroll your device and choose your Duo authentication method.
  4. Download the Duo Mobile app and enable the camera and notifications.

Duo Authentication Methods

Several authentication methods can be used to verify yourself - push, passcode, or alternative authentication, such as a token if you don’t have a mobile device.

Push Authentication (recommended)

With Duo Push, you’ll receive a notification on your smartphone. This method is quicker, easier, and more secure. The Duo Push screen displays detailed information about the application and device that initiated the authentication request. All you need to do is accept the request.

Passcode Authentication

This method allows users to confirm their identity using a secure passcode. This is the preferred method for international travel.

Using Duo Passcodes: Authenticate with Duo when offline

Phone call Authentication

You may select to receive a phone call to approve an authentication.  When selected, a call will be sent to your DUO-registered phone number. Audible instructions will be provided to approve the authentication upon answering the call.

Alternative Authentication

Other options may work for you if you cannot download Duo Push to a mobile device. You can use a tablet with Duo installed or a small device called a U2F Token (YubiKey or Feitian).

How to register your U2F Token

Note: Yubikeys will work with some AU systems, but not all.

  • When using the Chrome browser, IT-managed Systems, including AU email (Microsoft 365), Brightspace LMS, and Box, display a Duo prompt after logging in, support U2F tokens, and will work.
  • However, systems like VPN will not work with Yubikeys.
