Urology Preoperative Instructions

If you will be scheduled for a urologic surgical procedure, you will either:

  1. Have an appointment for Urology Preoperative Evaluation in the Urology Clinic on the 4th Floor of the Augusta University Medical Center Medical Office Building prior to your surgery. Depending on your health issues, you may have an additional appointment for Anesthesia Preoperative Evaluation, on 2nd Floor of the Medical Center across from the Little Store near the Terrace Dining. You may have a telephone interview instead of an appointment if you have no significant health issues. It will be easiest to park in the Harper Street Parking Garage for these appointments. Please bring your medications or at least a list of your medications to this visit. We will make every effort to make both of these appointments on the same day.

    OR

  2. Be admitted to the hospital prior to your surgery. Unless instructed otherwise, please arrive mid-morning on the day of admission. Park in the 15th Street Parking Garage and enter the West Entrance. You will see the Information Desk behind the Elevators. The Information Host can direct you around the corner to Admissions. You may need to wait in admissions for your bed assignment so bring a book or newspaper or some other way to pass the time.

If you have a problem or question or you need to reschedule your procedure, please call (leave a message if no answer) the Surgery Scheduling Office at 706-721-7206.

Please read the following instructions carefully. Failure to follow these instructions can be dangerous and may cause cancellation of your surgery!

DO NOT take any aspirin containing medications, anti-inflammatory medications, or platelet inactivating medications for 10 days before surgery (this includes:  any Aspirin containing medications, any Ibuprofen-containing medications, Naprosyn, Toradol, Indomethacin, Dipyridamole, Clopidogrel, and Plavix). Nutritional supplements such as Fish Oil, Gingko, Iodine and Garlic can increase your chances of bleeding as well. St. Johns Wart can prolong the activity of some anesthetics. You should discontinue any of these supplements before surgery.

If you are taking Coumadin or Warfarin, have any artificial implants (such as hip replacements, heart valves, or penile implants), heart murmurs, or allergies to medications, PLEASE inform your urology doctor.
