About the Internship

Students will split their time between classroom lectures and laboratory (clinical and computer) sessions.  The internship explores the GEM lab's transformation during the pandemic as one of the first labs in the state testing for COVID-19. It is designed to follow the chronological order of events in a clinical laboratory following an infectious disease outbreak, including next-generation sequencing of a pathogen, problem-solving to stream testing workflows, applying for FDA Emergency Use Authorization, and interpreting data through visualization tools. Students will benefit from career networking, direct mentorship, hands-on lab training and bioinformatics tutorials.

Eligibility & Qualifications

No person under the age of 16 is permitted to work in laboratories or other hazardous areas. Student applicants to the AME Internship must be at least 16 years old by the first day of the internship. Students must currently attend high school in Richmond or Columbia counties or be enrolled as an undergraduate student at AU. Prior experience in a laboratory is not expected. Approval to work in the laboratory is required and granted upon completion of internship forms, physician clearance form with TB test, and biosafety training modules. Admission to the program is selective and based upon interest in the program, academic achievement, and space available.

FAQs

  • Who can apply?
    • Undergraduate and high school students may apply (must be 16 years old before internship begins) and participants are paid $1500 for their six-week commitment.
  • I am not a minor. Do I need to complete the paperwork?
    • Please complete the paperwork by filling out your name (parent/guardian signatures not needed) and submitting each document in your application checklist. This will allow us to view your application as complete through the portal.
  • How do I apply?
    • Complete the registration form at https://apply.augusta.edu/register/AME2025.
    • Create your portal login account. If you already have one, make sure to select MCG AME in the “Switch Applications” menu.
    • Click on the hyperlinked forms listed under “Application Checklist” to download the forms. Note that you will need a physician’s signature on the minors health questionnaire.
    • Submit completed forms by selecting the type of form in the dropdown menu under “Upload Materials” and click the Choose File button to upload. Your “Application Checklist” will update the status of the required forms to “received.”
    • Please send unofficial transcripts by email to AME_Internship@augusta.edu.  Once we have received all your material, our team will be notified to review your application. Email us with questions.
  • Do I need to submit my immunization record?
    • No.
  • What is the schedule like? I have other obligations over the summer.
    • The current session (2025) will take place from 9:30-1:30, Monday through Friday (20 hours per week). Flexibility is required- we may start late or leave early depending on schedule for the day. We recognize that AU students taking premed courses over the summer may have to miss an hour or so of the internship per week and we will work with students on an individual basis to accommodate these absences with some flexibility, e.g., providing lecture slides to review after hours in lieu of complete attendance.
  • How do I get a TB test and physician’s signature on the minor’s health questionnaire?
    • You may schedule an appointment at Student Health Services at AU or online at a pharmacy like CVS Minute Clinic to get a TB test. It is covered by most insurance and requires two in-person visits 2-3 days apart. Send an email to your family physician’s office (or the physician you have seen most recently) with your minors health questionnaire and TB test results attached for them to sign and email back to you.
    • Medical offices are often busy in winter but most are used to completing these requests for sports physicals or travel clearances. We can make allowances for document submissions after the January 31st deadline if needed, please let us know by email.
  • How do I obtain my transcripts?
    • If you are a high school student, send a request to your school counselor or registrar. You can email your record to AME_Internship@augusta.edu.
    • If you are an AU student, login to Pounce (https://pounce.augusta.edu), select “Student” and then select “View Unofficial Academic Transcript.” You can email your record to AME_Internship@augusta.edu.  If you have any difficulties, reach out to registrar@augusta.edu.

Funding

The AME Internship is supported by a grant for the five CDC Pathogen Genomics Centers of Excellence, a network of academic institutions and public health departments developing solutions to improve technical capacity in pathogen genomics and support public health laboratories. To form one of the five centers, the Georgia Department of Public Health has partnered with six academic institutions: Augusta University, University of Georgia, Georgia Tech Research Institute, Emory University, Georgia State University, and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
