Medical Knowledge
Goal: Acquire basic knowledge of pathogenesis, diagnosis and management of common medical conditions in the adult patient

• Demonstrate knowledge of normal and abnormal structure and function of the human body as it relates to medicine (1.1)
• Identify pathology and pathophysiology of various diseases (1.2)
• Diagnose common acute and chronic clinical problems in medicine (1.3) • Differentiate variations in age-related changes (1.4)
• Demonstrate knowledge of clinical interventions (1.5)
• Demonstrate knowledge of preventive medicine, current guidelines and disease screening (1.7)

Patient Care
Goals: Provide effective patient care for promotion of health and management of illness

• Treat patients using a patient and family centered care approach (2.1)
• Obtain a complete and accurate medical history of the adult patient and that also addresses issues related to age, gender, culture, use of complementary medicine and socioeconomic status (2.2)
• Perform both complete and symptom-focused exam of the adult patient (2.3) • Develop a differential diagnosis and evaluation scheme for common problems in medicine (2.5)
• Participate in team review of clinical tests as part of planning (2.6)
• Identify common clinical problems in medicine and outline an initial diagnostic and therapeutic plan(2.7)
Practice-Based Learning and Improvement 
Goal: Clinical problem-solving skills

• Accept constructive criticism and modify behavior based on feedback (3.3) 
• Use appropriate resources to answer clinical questions (3.4)
Communication
Goal: Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration with patients, families and professional associates

• Prepare an accurate written summary of the history and exam and orally present the case in a focused and organized manner (4.3)
• Recognize barriers to communication and ways to overcome them (4.5)
• Educate patients on preventive strategies and medical risks and benefits (4.6)
Professionalism
Goal: Demonstrate attitudes and professional behaviors appropriate for clinical practice

• Complete assignments in a timely and responsible manner (5.2)
Systems-Based Practice
Goal: Develop an awareness of health care system resources

• Work within a multidisciplinary patient care team with an understanding of the physician’s role as team leader and the importance of ancillary staff (6.1)

 

Student Requirements:

• Mid-Rotation Feedback
• Direct Observation – Adult focused history and exam (heart and lung) 
• Patient/Procedure Logs
• 4 graded history and physical examination write-ups • Evidence-based write-up
• Participation in weekly Academic Half Day
• NBME Internal Medicine Subject Exam (minimum pass at 5th percentile nationally)
