The General Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship at Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia is a comprehensive three-year program, with 5 positions offered per year for prospective fellows, designed to provide the needed skills for a successful leadership role and career in both academic and clinical practice. The total amount and specifics of clinical training will be individually determined to best meet the career goals of each fellow. Our program is ACGME accredited and ABIMAmerican Board of Internal Medicine certified in the subspecialty of cardiovascular disease.

Our mission is to educate fellows in the assessment and management of patients with cardiovascular disease using multifaceted and multidisciplinary training in all areas of Cardiovascular Medicine, while providing clinical and basic science research opportunities. Training at Augusta University builds competent cardiovascular physicians who can thrive in academic, research and private practice settings.

MCG was the first medical school established in Georgia. MCG at Augusta University Health is now a 520-bed tertiary hospital that provides many services not available in other facilities in the region; it is a Level 1 trauma center, has a certified stroke center, has a large STEMI/PCI and Pulmonary Embolism center and now has an accredited LVAD Program. Our state of the art Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit allows us to provide unparalleled clinical training to our fellows, educate them on managing complex and challenging cases and become independent cardiologists and leaders in their field.

The General Cardiology Fellowship Program offers 5 positions per year (15 total fellows), along with two accredited sub-fellowships in Interventional and Electrophysiology. The core curriculum is designed to provide a strong clinical foundation for fellows, achieve the American College of Cardiology's Core Cardiovascular Training Statement (COCATS) requirements and be level two certified in coronary angiography, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. Furthermore, there is a flexibility in our program to allow the fellows to tailor their fellowship journey to their specific interests, whether in advanced imaging (level 1 or 2 in CT and level 1 in CMR), structural intervention, advanced heart failure, cardio-oncology, cardio-obstetrics and many others. This opportunity is provided through several electives and subspecialized clinics (PFO/stroke, vascular medicine, pulmonary embolism, sleep, cardio-oncology, cardio-obstetrics, preventive cardiology). Our fellows spend most of their time training at the Augusta University Health main hospital and complement their training with a few months spent at the adjacent Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center - a 400 bed facility.
Patients from the entire state of Georgia and Southeast are referred to Augusta University Health and the Children's Medical Center for cardiovascular issues.

Eligible candidates for the Cardiovascular Diseases Fellowship must have successfully completed three years of postgraduate training in an accredited internal medicine program in the U.S. or Canada, and be board eligible for the internal medicine certification. To ensure licensure, candidates must have passes the United States Medical Licensing Examination Step 3. We sponsor J1 visa applications; we do not sponsor H1 visa for the fellowship program.
The application and all supporting documentation must be submitted through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by July 31st of the year PRECEDING the program start date. The academic year begins in July. Application materials outside of ERAS are not accepted.
